>>Since I have promoted this announcement among my non h2g2 friends, it is likely that they will come and read.<<
Can I just point out that this ANNOUNCEMENT thread has also been tweeted to the wider world twice today? Some of those who follow that link will be getting this thread as their first ever experience of h2g2. While topic drift is the norm on this site, my personal opinion is that and
assaults and grumbles about aspects of the site might best be suited to other threads. Just saying.

Actually, I think people who would enjoy the mammoth thing are just the kind we want here, so that's ok

I don't know - it's easy for things like that to get a bit cliquey. Which is cool and fun if you're in the know, but as a first experience of h2g2 I think people would be clicking off to somewhere else pretty sharpish...

I'm not sure how many h2g2ers play MMOs...
But this sort of thing is called an Event, and is usually considered A Feature.
As a former professional gamemaster, I can tell you that Events are usually very popular with all but a few people. These people then spam the petition queue.

Have it your way. But if you're seriously telling me that this thread is an example of the best of h2g2 I think you need your head examined.

...For instance, in the book that was published to showcase the best of h2g2 during the bid, how many threads like this were included? Now, I wonder why?

It's pretty simple really. Keep Announcements for announcements and Q and A about the announcements. There are plenty of other places to play.

Seriously, relax folks. Pet the , feel it purr.
Everyone is way overly concerned with newbies first impressions and discussing how we should behave accordingly. It really doesn't matter.
A. We are a weird, eclectic, silly group and trying to wrangle us only makes us act odder.
2. Any newbie drifting here off a random tweet or link will get to the weird, cliquishy parts, and probably not be be put off, but rather venture around to different entries or forums. That's basically how we all got stuck here. It was a weird place that we didn't really understand but appealed to us anyway.

kea,
With all the excitement, you might have missed this entry A1094438 when it was on the Front Page.
This paragraph might address your concern:
"NPL has entrusted our new teams of volunteers with the day-to-day running of h2g2. We are delighted to introduce our new volunteer Guide Editors - Dmitri, Gnomon, Icy North and Lanzababy. Our moderators are also volunteers, acting on a mandate from the NPL Board to help keep h2g2 running smoothly."

I do understand you're speaking from experience
and by definition from a prior or previous event
but it sounds a bit off using the past tense.
May I render it into the future pluperfect?
"It'll be a weird place we will never understand or abandon."
That way it becomes a motto for Life and the 42nd
answer to the ultimate questions.
IE: What is the meaning of life?
42: Ir's a weird place we never understand or abandon.
IE: What is h2g2
42: It's a weird place we never understand or abandon.
IE: But is it Life?
42: It's a living.

It's not all about newbies. And I don't need to be told what appealed to me about the site and made me join, thanks - C'mon, be serious. It became so ridiculous that Z even felt it necessary to make a post explaining what the hell was going on. Not for newbies, but for researchers who have been using the site for years.

No you're right, it did get a bit weird, though the really strange stuff did go off into another thread and an journal.
I think those that were online at the time seemed to follow it ok, but those that weren't and read the whole backlog later found it seriously weird.
Though I have to admit it was fun!.

But, yes, with the benefit of hindsight, we should have moved into to a journal earlier.

There hasn't been a power shift of any sort what so ever.
I always have been, and always will be A GOD. You are all unwitting minions in my plans for universal domination.
Recognise that fact, move on.
(Please not that the above statement is utter tosh, twaddle and inaccurate rubbish)

Well I, for one, seriously enjoyed watching the chaos of the gnome outbreak yesterday, and the that emerged as a result. The fact that it happened in public areas, rather than a journal, meant that a normal researcher could follow the plot, as I was able too.
And I can prove that. Here - A87722265 - this was me, not a Volunteer, not involved in events, not a participant in any in-joke, but still managing to follow the trail of breadcrumbs, and record it for posterity.
That was fun.
