Yes, there should definitely be more pictures than one where needed.
Well, maybe we'll also do pictures for fictional Entries in the future? That would be a good one for arts.
No, I think it makes much more sense if people post their pictures and then we discuss it and they can improve stuff and *then* we decide what to take. More like PR but with the possibility of more than one person giving pictures for one topic.
What do you think?

"What may work is for the CA's to create images where it would be difficult or impossible to get a photo, or where there isn't one of good enough quality, otherwise the Photographers get first crack."
I don't necessarily see why photographs should be preferred unless there isn't one available.

I agree KB, I also don't think photographs should be preferred. I only see big advantages for photographs when they belong to a geographical Entry, or an Entry about a city, something like that.

KB, the suggestion was made because a large number of entries couldn't have photographic input, whereas the CA's could, theoretically, cover 100% of all entries.
For example, before I fully understood how blobs worked, I took photos to replace all the plant blobs. Yes, I knew no different. I just thought they were there because no-one could photograph them, or Auntie Beeb hadn't a stock photo. I was politely soon corrected.
Anyway, just a thought as, due to mobility restrictions, a range of photos would be beyond me anyway.
Still keen, whatever the outcome.

Well, there haven't been any conflicts on the issue so far. I guess there's no reason there has to be now.

On that point, how do we stand with entries that currently have Auntie Beeb's stock photos attached.
Do we want to replace them with in-house blobs / photos? For example, I'm not happy with the Beeb photo on my Parrot entry (A21989974)

What would you like to do with artistic flair, Haragai?

KB Posted Jun 22, 2011
That's a good question, MMF - a *lot* of illustrations were used because they were stills from a BBC TV show, not because they were great illustrations.
It's quite possible that we'll have to replace them if we no longer have rights to those photographs.

I think replacing the BBC photos with in-house pictures should ba a long-term project and not seen as absolutely urgent. Entries without any picture should have priority.

This may not be the place to bring this up, and I understand that copyright issues are always a problem with sites like H2G2, but I am wondering if there could be more flexibility in allowing members to upload images to their personal space?

Would we want to change them anyway? I'd feel happier if they were in-house, and gives us plenty to get involved with, during the transition.
Maybe draw up a list that each member of the AV'Arts team feels comfortable with?

Are we going to continue using the h2g2 Yahoo site, or opt for a different system?
Or do we wait to see what transpires with the noohootoo?

We will get a forum in the Noesis forums. All volunteer groups will. It's already set up, we're just waiting for people to figure out some stuff. We should be able to move in within the next days.
Pictures can be loaded up to posts but everyone only has a certain space (file size wise wise). I still have to find some things out about that myself.
I'll give you news on that as soon as I have any.

I'd like to see the new site invest in a photo library service - it can't be all that expensive, surely?

I made a suggestion (somewhere) that as we have acquired so many domain names in the run up to bidding (h2g2.com may be the domain of choice but we have the option to invoke others) that we could perhaps set one up as an image library and video bank, and all the content could be linked to h2g2.com rather than kept on the main site. I know it will still take up server space but it would a darn sight easier to chop and change if we get pushed for capacity. Plus it won't slow the speed of the main site (apart from buffering obviously).

We will certainly have to find a solution for an image library. It's a thing for the tech guys, but at the moment they have more urgent problems.
I guess it would make sense if we take care of an archive for our new pictures ourselves until a better solution is available.
You mentioned this before, RTG, and as far as I remember I handed your idea on to Pastey but I can't quite remember what he answered.

In time we will get to organising a regular gathering of the spokespersons from each of the Teams on hootoo and put some nails in the Feature Requests that have fermented over time.
That almost sounds like a real Community where the Village Elders gather round and mumble and grumble
So, don't stop thinking up new (or reanimated) ideas

AViator's might be able to produce short slide shows (useing the photo grope photos) with sound for suitable entries as well as stane alone AViator productions.
Well its an idea

This is really just thinking aloud and is already partly covered by earlier comments, but perhaps a photo library of some kind could be run to help part fund the new H2G2 site. Something perhaps like Tinypic.com?

I can do art stuff.
I'll have a go at something if I think I can do it.
