A Conversation for The Temple of Existentialism
nothingness... is there any such thing?

(Christopher Robin said) "... what i like doing best is Nothing"
"How do you do Nothing?" asked Pooh, after he had wondered for a long time.
"Well, its when people call out at you just as you are going off to do it 'what are you going to do, Christopher Robin?' and you say 'Oh, nothing,' and then you go and do it."
"Oh, i see" said Pooh.
Always thought Pooh was a lot brighter than he admitted.
Can it be possible to do nothing and still exist?

Well..the existence of nothing and the doing of nothing are two different things..which did you mean?
nothingness... is there any such thing?
Existential Elevator Posted Aug 25, 2002
It depends on what 'nothing' is. If it's absolute nothing, then, umm....no.
nothingness... is there any such thing?
eyethink_eyethink Posted Aug 25, 2002
hmmm i think that's sort of the point nothing can not exist... because if it does... then its something
nothingness... is there any such thing?

*is reminded of overly cheesy illustration in a presentation years ago, in which a storyteller said, "It is not the cup, but the empty space inside that becomes useful'* hmm...deep.
*is a usefully vacant vessel * (heads out of the gutter, people)
nothingness... is there any such thing?

<< breaks into song >>
"busy doing nothing working the whole day through...
trying to find lots of things not to do...
bust going nowhere isn't it just a crime...
i'd like to feel unhappy but...
i never do have the time..."
unhelpful in this context i know but it just popped into my head.
nothingness... is there any such thing?
eyethink_eyethink Posted Aug 27, 2002
nope... if its nothing how can you call it something? i.e. a vacuum
p.s. i know my vacuum exists cause i did the hoovering with it earlier
nothingness... is there any such thing?
Existential Elevator Posted Aug 31, 2002
But that contradicts itself: if it's nothing why can you call it 'nothing'<?>
nothingness... is there any such thing?
Teasswill Posted Sep 10, 2002
I'm not sure if it's really relevant here, but hey, who cares?
I am reminded of the way people sometimes 'don't see' things of which they have no comprehension - or believe they have seen something else. e.g. 'natives' ignore a sailing ship on the horizon or say it is a big fish.
A sort of no-thing approach?
nothingness... is there any such thing?

As I was going up the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there,
He wasn't there again today,
I wish I wish he'd go away.
nothingness... is there any such thing?

My computer thinks there's nothing in one of its DIMM slots.......stupid machine.

eyethink_eyethink Posted Oct 16, 2002
teasswil...
have you tried removing the nothing from your slot...
<>>
hmmm interesting thought, its not possible to remove nothing only to replace it with something
nothingness... is there any such thing?
Teasswill Posted Oct 17, 2002
My PC has achieved enlightenment with my assistance.....
Can you replace something with nothing, or do you just have an absence of something?
nothingness... is there any such thing?
Existential Elevator Posted Oct 22, 2002
Nothing is the absence of something.
