Actually, no, they're improvised, although I admit they do give the impression of ancient jokes dug from the primeval mud, along with the flint tools and the remains of australopithecus.

No. All topics are related, as Dirk Gently will tell you. Topic drift is a part of how H2G2 models thought ... although I think it would be better if threads could be merged and disconnected into trains of thought, for his very reason. If nothing else it would be a fascinating picture of the human understanding of subjects.
