I heard recently that Switzerland had a referendum where they voted to join the UN. Also, the Isle of Man isn't a country. It's a British Crown Dependency with internal self government--like Jersey and Guernsey.

The referendum rejected entry to the UN. Which was a real blow to the government whom were using it as a litmus test for a referendum on joining the EC.
It was the home govenment issue that i was hoping to get around to mentioning in the section on the UK - we think of some dependencies as seperate states and others as not.

I just searched BBC News Online and found that Switzerland joined the UN on 10 Sep 2001. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/europe/2249500.stm
(If the URL doesn't show up, search for "Swiss end splendid UN isolation" in the search box in the top right hand corner)

You'd have thought they'd have mentioned this on the UN website! Changes will have to be made, evidently.
Thanks for the info.
