Hi new bookworms. It has been quiet around here lately!

I'm currently reading Farenheit 451 but not got far into it yet. I have recently finished Brave New World and 1984 - am trying to get a variety of dystopias! I thought it was interesting the way that the society in both these books used sex as one of a number of methods of control over the subjects, but used it in opposite ways. Brave New World keeps people oversexed and ensures that their lives are so full of sensual pleasures that they never stop to think, and in 1984 almost bans it in order to control all emotions. Lots to think about in both these books, am hoping that 451 will add to it.

There is another similar book, I think written in the 1920s, called We or Them or something. Radio 4 serialised it but I missed it, would like to read it - does anyone know what book I am talking about so I can search Amazon for it?

I've been meaning to finish 1984, but I have read Brave New World. One of my favorite books. It also is clearly the lighter of the two dystopias. Actually what always caught me was the use of soma, considering as though I'm largely against using pills to regulate myself in any way, shape, and/or form. And am not fond of the recent upsurge in pill commercials (in the States). We have doctors for perscription drugs, people shouldn't make that judgement. Either way, its very much like Brave New World...

read 1984, started Brave New World.
As for pills- if people want pleasure bad enough, they'll do anything for it.
