A Conversation for Community Art

Maybe I'm being a bit thick, but I'm not sure what you're getting at?

Mina Posted Apr 30, 2002
And please tell Lil not to feel bad, she'd done her bit by at least visiting the page and helping me.
I was disappointed at the lack of reaction from the Community, especially when I consider the number of people that are constantly asking for smilies, pictures, and graphics and badges for clubs.

Irving Washington organised the float parade. He may know which ones were blobbed.

I think my connection has improved (we'll know by whether this post posts ) --
Thanks to Sporky for picking up and delivering the message I sent via the Offsite Topic Drift list. I am gradually picking up bits here and at the atelier which explain how it is that the atelier never got blobbed. and apologise if I've sounded whingy. I'm having a really unsettling day, for entirely unrelated reasons.
Linda, let me know when the process gets underway for adding to the Blob Heap.
Thanks,
Lil

I don't think it is fair to cite "lack of reaction from the community" as justification for leaving some principle players out. When looking for community art, it must have been very obvious that 90% of it was generated by maybe 3 or 4 individuals. How much effort would it have taken to contact these 4 directly, in addition to posting on 'ask h2g2'?
I spend several hours on h2g2 every day (except Saturday and Wednesday ), but I almost never visit 'ask h2g2'. I have way too many other threads to check and the 'ask h2g2' threads are seldom relevant for me. I'm sure there are many of the long-time regular h2g2ers who also do not check that forum. So, you can't rely on it to reach a very small group of researchers.
Is 'blobbing' something a highly technical job? Or is it labour intensive? What is the difficulty?

SE Posted Apr 30, 2002
Most of my images were blobbed due to the result of someone else coming to me and asking if it was okay to have them blobbed. Then that information was passed onto someone else...
If it wasn't for the fact that I did graphics for so many different places on h2g2, especially for the post, I would have never been asked.

I must say I'm with Garius on this one.
Sort of.
I *do* check askh2g2 - however were it not for that fact I would have had no idea that this project was even under-way.
I realise you said it was announced in the "community jobs" message from the Towers Linda, but I don't scrutinise everything that passes under my nose, so I guess I just missed this.
If there are others like me (and though I value my uniquness, I suspect that there are! ) I suspect it is very much more likely that the lack so-far of much community participation is not so much a question of apathy as of ignorence.

I did post to the individual artists' Personal Spaces.
I didn't want to reach a very small group of Researchers, I wanted to reach a large group of Researchers.
I'm also not sure what 'principle players' I've left out?
Sporkulious Enron, I didn't know that you had done any graphics for h2g2. I gather from what you are saying that you don't know the blob numbers? Is any of the artwork on this page yours?

Over a hundred ACEs and nearly 50 Gurus have been told about this page. I've now changed my name. There is no excuse for ignorance.

Ditto.
Bring along your dungeon at the x-mas meet-up (would make an interesting replacement from Santa's Grotto) - and punish all researchers who fail to comply!!

Garius Lupus Posted Apr 30, 2002
No excuse for ignorance, now that the gravy train has ended.
One principle player that got missed was Lil. She didn't know until it was too late that some people's graphics were being blobbed. Seems that Sporky and Clive didn't either. It doesn't help them much to know now, since you have said that you aren't blobbing any more.
Any chance of blobbing some of the things they really want?
Lil Artworks
Mina Posted Apr 30, 2002
Aha, now I see what you mean. I can claim innocence, because I was a Researcher at the time.
>>Any chance of blobbing some of the things they really want?
That's the point of what I'm doing. We're not prepared to blob the fantastic artwork that the Community does, only to see it disappear again. When the library is up and running, then it'll be a lot easier to blob new stuff.

most of mine were done for clubs or for the post. Most of the club ones are gone now... including my Lazy B*****s society, which seems to rub the moderators the wrong way, although the specifications for joining the society are that you are a slothly illegitamite child...

Seeing, Linda, as you are a) wonderful and knowledgable b) on-line at the moment - is there any chance you could answer these questions I posed to The Boss, this morning?

I really want to participate in the proper spirit here, but one thing isn't clear to me. Did the first round of blobbing really depend on our relationship to the H2G2 Post? That seems to put a lot of responsibility on ~them~. I never had time to properly contribute to the Post, and have never been commissioned to do any art for them, although every now and then Shazz or Pastey have stopped by to beat me up for my laziness.
*suddenly remembers Mama Peta's Italian restaurant (and Styx the Rat!) and goes off to check the list*

Spork, can you look at the page? I've got quite a lot of stuff on there from The Post, and various other clubs and societies. I'd like to know if some of it is yours.
Clive, I saw that Conversation earlier, don't worry, you won't be forgotten.
