A Conversation for The Phantom Menace
The Hitch-Hiker Film
The Wisest Fool Started conversation May 23, 1999
I guess all this Star Wars stuff could be a taster for when (if?) the long mooted Hitch-Hikers' Guide film is made.
In the UK we had the radio series which was groundbreaking due its production values. Then the books which were 80% like the radio stories but ever so slightly different. Then the TV series which suffered from the usual 'Dr Who' budget restraints, but was pretty true to the story in the books.
Are we all ready for a fourth reading of the same story, or do we want something different?
The thing I'm worried about is that the H2G2 film will just be what's in the book(s) transposed to the US of A. Where Ford Prefect becomes Ford Mustang, Cricket bacomes Baseball and Trillian is played by Sharon Stone.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not (that) anti-American but I just hate it when someone gets their hands on a great little 'foreign' film and packs it in a trunk to Hollywood, USA.

I am an American. Born and raised in Southern California.
It would be disasterous if the Hitchhiker's Guide were made into an Americanized movie. It would be wrong, it would be horrendous. They tried to do that with Mr. Bean (a poor example, I know, but an example nonetheless). If it is to be done, it should be done in true British fashion. Hollywood would only mess it up.

As a native American, I have no trouble saying that, although the movie might be a little diffrent from the books, it must not be Americanized under any circumstances.
English comedy is some of the best in the world (Douglas Adams, Monty Python, etc.) without us messing with it. Leave it as is.

No. Keep it English!
Down with the Euro!
Up with the rebellion!
Errr..... Sorry. Got Carried away!
No, please don't let them American-ize it!
I'm not anti-American, at all, but it's so _English_ isn't it?
Is the film going to be made, or not?

I was only joking about the UK to US thing.
I'm pretty sure Douglas Adams wouldn't let it happen -he's far too fond of his tea and far too tall.
So, here's the pitch for the film -
"It's raining, it's night..."
No, I really have no idea about whether or not the film will exist, let alone what form it will take.
Please could Researcher 42 spill the beans?

i read some where disney aquired the rights to make the film. granted, that ford mustang and baceball thing would suck but with disney working with pixar (i.e. a bug's life & toy story) the computer graphics would be a nice plus.

Disney? That is too scary for words.
Maybe they'll fit a working model Total Perspective Vortex in the Epcot centre. Probably have to borrow the one from Bill Gates's house.

If I see Tinkerbell flutter past the Heart of Gold on Magreathea, or any other Disney refrence, I will be extremely angry.

Sometime in possible future, interior of a Disney exec's office:
"OK so we cut the script a little, took out that Dent guy - I mean he was so damn downbeat - had Harrison Ford destroy the Vogons in the first reel, like so what. The cross-merchandising with Pepsi went Galactic and the Dentrassi MacShakes flew outta der store. Anyway, look at the great press we got. Most critics agree it was our best sci-fi film since The Black Hole."

In fact, I've already made up the begginning of my review I want to do for the movie.
"It was boring, it was predictable, nothing looked right, nothing sounded right, [anything else I can think up].................. in fact, it was a million times better than I thought it was going to be.

Watch, they put in the whale from Pinochio. Well, that may be good, because I wouldn't feel sorry for it when it hit the ground. But if someone walks out of it's chunks...

H2G2 movie
Baaboy Posted Jun 10, 1999
I'd like to say a few things.
Firstly, it would not be cool having an animatde H2G2 movie, it would suck. Sure, I'd like to see the same special effects as Star Wars, but not with little cowboys and green guys with three heads. By the way, ants are not blue.
Second, I am an Aussie, so I am not biased either to the UK or USA, but I think it would be good to have Hollywood doing the movie, because they have the technology, but with a script approved by Douglas Adams that followed the storyline pretty much the same. If the cricket was baseball, it wouldn't be the same.
Third, the episodes of H2G2 that we got out here on cable, there were only six, only followed Arthur's story. Sure he ws the main character, but you have to remember all that stuff about Zaphod and the Ruler of the Universe. The Heart of Gold was only seen from when they went from the Vogon ship to Magrathea, and I thought it pretty much sucked.
I shall now go and bury my head in an anthill

Australia was a British Colony...and Hollywood has no place in the Guide.
Not biased
Baaboy Posted Jun 11, 1999
Now hang on.
I was born in Australia, not Britain. I am Australian, not British, (or Brittish as the Americans think it's spelt). My parents are actually descended from the Dutch, so there.
And Hollywood's a nice place, especially all the famous people, like Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman.
And you can't tell me they're not real, they're just like Santy Claus...
