A Conversation for The Ultimate Martial Art?

Too Right, You Are

An old friend of mine, a Marine and a Karate instructor, said,"A man
without a weapon can run faster than a man with one."
The O Sensai of Aikido fame said,"Any confrontation you can't avoid is one you've lost."
Just thought I'd visit you,too.

Great to see this get in the Guide. It is very funny - and also, perhaps, rather timely! smiley - peacedove

I wanted to Recommend it when it was in Peer Review, but thought it'd get rejected for being non-factual. I'm really pleased to see that I was wrong! smiley - cheers

I enjoyed the entry when it was in Peer Review. It seems to have made it through in nearly its original form, but I recall a lot of argument over it.

Congratulations to the author.

A big thank you to everyone who's complimented this entry. I was a labour of love. If you are interested in comparison, you can find the original (complete with picture, and the "arguments" (which I prefer to think of as "constructive discussions"smiley - winkeye) hanging off it) here:

Hmm, nice entry. But that quote by Sun Tzu seems wrong. I don't think the guy was talking about avoiding a battle, more about winning it without fighting. As he said elsewhere, "If you can make the enemy loose his will to fight, you have achieved the true objective of war."

Any battle you can walk away from, you can lie about later.

Yeah, the quote by Sun Tzu is slightly out of place. I know that's not what he meant. It went in for two reasons:

1. Gratuitous use of the tag - I knew there was already an entry on Sun Tzu and I hoped that people who read this and laughed would click the link and find out more about him.

2. It *sort* of fits. And the "misunderstanding" of the meaning of it is in character with the rest of the piece.

Thanks for reading, and more to the point, thanks for *thinking* about it enough to comment!

I still feel the quote is out of place. But I'll let others decide about it.

As for Tai Chi, is that a martial art? I didn't thought it was more than that imitating slow motion.

Yes, Tai Chi is a martial art. Check out the article that HV links to (wot I rote) smiley - smiley
