Tuesday 21 June, 2011: The future of H2G2 - the Successful Bid

Just a couple of question here. As I intend to be / remain with H2G2, do I have to reply to the e - mails that I have received? Will we need to re - register or anything like that?
I really like H2G2 even after the sell is completed.

Briefly, you don't need to reply to those specific emails, but when the sale is completed there will be later emails which you will need to act on to register with the site in its new home.
Do nothing, yet.

Well, when you get around to it, I guess you could procrastinate. But I wouldn't bother doing that for a while.

The email that I received was addressed to me as an h2g2 user. It did have h2g2 in capitals whether or not that has any significance. Perhaps the BBC will retain the half finished Barlesque.
It would be interesting to see the email that has been sent to those with a BBC id who have not signed on to h2g2.
The on my shoulder often tempted me to play around with more than one id within the the BBC single sign up system. Will the data be moved over lock stock and barrel or will it remain backed up in the BBC archives ?
I've put my old PS here :- A86314124 thinking that I may try a new life in our brave new world.
In any case if I get lost in the transfer it gives me another point of reference.

I don't consider myself y, but to people who don't know *anything* about computers I look like a
genius. This might work out to my benefit someday, so I'm not very diligent in setting the recorsd straight with them.

I did register another ID (with the nickname "brians not such a bad lad") when one of the recent bouts of change was going on on TOS. I have posted over there with it but never here (although the last post /was/ a while ago), and I have had no emails to that address about the change-over so it is probably limited to those who, at some time or other, have been active in h2g2.
Doughy.

The emails seemed to contradict each other until I figured out what they were trying to say.....

I have almost completed the article on "Louis Armstrong" and will be posting it here as soon as its complete. I was just wondering if a discography would be required for this? I have the information but its long. Let me know.

That's great!
Submit it to PeerReview ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/PeerReview ) when you're ready. That's the place for it.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Aug 4, 2011
If the discography is extremely long, then the Entry would be better without it. h2g2 Entries are meant to be interesting reading, and a long list does not make interesting reading unless you spice it up with lots of extra information.

Lanzababy - Guide Editor Posted Aug 4, 2011
I agree - I think the discography information is the sort of thing a wikipedia article would include, whereas the Edited Guide should be Entries that are purely interesting reading, containing well researched facts presented in a literary manner.
It people want to find a complete discography, I expect there are fan sites for that purpose out there on the net already.

Z Posted Aug 4, 2011
You could even include a link to a site that does contain the discography.

Rod Posted Aug 4, 2011
Unless, perhaps you put the discography into another (non-Edited) entry and link to it...
Would that be appropriate, CZ / Gnomon?
Tuesday 21 June, 2011: The future of H2G2 - the Successful Bid
Z Posted Aug 4, 2011
At the moment edited entries can only link to edited entries, so that wouldn't be appropriate, but there's nothing to stop you linking to a reliable external site.

Rod Posted Aug 4, 2011
That's interesting, Z. Didn't know that.
Sorry, folks

Lanzababy - Guide Editor Posted Aug 4, 2011
There's a valid reason for only linking to Edited Entries - and this is that they cannot be subsequently altered, amended or deleted apart from by the Curators or italics. This prevents incorrect, inappropriate or otherwise objectionable information being linked to.
