Ahh, Dark Master (of Thermos-flask knowledge).

You put cold stuff in, it stays cold.
You put hot stuff in it stays hot.
But how does it *know* ? smiley - winkeye

So we should test that by carefully waiting till you've gone away before asking or answering anything interesting...

Now you have said that i will keep a careful eye on this conversation even if I do unsubscribe, just incase you a) mention me again or b) say anything intersting

Also what about the other ways to see the servers?

It seems that would fall into category (b) and therefore not be allowed.

Huh? How do you run a trace or ping a server? Am I the only one who has no idea what anyone is talking about? Maybe I'm just an idiot.

Ah. Nevermind. I clearly don't know enough about computers to understand an answer.

Well, I set out to reply to you when your posting was 'just now'. I tried to find either of these downtime notices by searching the forums for 'time'. The first one that interested me was number 504 in the list, the convo for the 12 January 2004 warning, and this one does not appear in the first 700 entries given by the search. The only practical way to find these conversations really is to say subscribed.

The method which I described above was persisted with just to make this reply, and would, in my judgement, have to be classed as impractical. If you are not subscribed, just how do you tell that old conversations have become interesting again, even if you could remember the subject was time?

I do not attempt to refind interesting conversations again, however i may see whats happened in the recent postings if the conversation is very active/busy.

From windows, run a DOS prompt.

Type:

PING < URL >

It will give you an IP. But the IP may differ the next time you try it.

The point of domain names, is that a IP can be attributed to it server side. Though some stay static...

http://64.69.179.100/webtv/Telewest/playjam/index.htm is always 64.69.179.100. Also of little use to people on a PC smiley - erm

I know how to ping places, but what to ping, surely pinging www.bbc.co.uk is not all there is to it.
