MaW, 6 months after adding my name to this I've finally got around to checking it (I'm not the patron of the Procrastinators society for nothing, you know smiley - winkeye) and I'd like to point out that it was the Fiction Writers' club I was secretary of, not the Science Fiction Writers' club, though as it happens just about everyone *did* write Science fiction smiley - winkeye

Oh, and I probably won't graduate until the end of 2003 at this rate smiley - winkeye

*wonders if positions to be held count*

(if so, I'm joining RU Ambassadors next year, the Exit 109 staff, and possibly rushing either Phi Sigma Pi (Honors sorority) or Mu Phi Epsilon (Honors Music Sorority)... but those last two aren't likely)

I'm not entirely sure... most frats and sororities are created as social venues-- a few for honors type people in certain majors (you have to keep a certain GPA to stay in). As for why they chose the letters they do, I don't know...

One thing I have noticed is that the Psychology frat uses the "Psy" (or however you spell that) in their letters, the Music frats (there are two) and Music sororities (there are also two) use Mu in the letters... I'm sure there's significance, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. *shrug*

I think part of using Greek letters for student social things is mostly to make it look more studious... "hey, cool, we can pronnounce this gobbeltygook! We're like So-crates!" "Yeah, well, you can also drink three six packs of Buds without passing out and that doesn't impress me either."

Classical music society just doesn't cut it then? smiley - winkeye

On an aside all the union societys here at hull are generall abreviated to 'soc' - um...cath soc (catholics society) is a prominant one that springs to mind.

Given the plethora of h2g2 researchers currently at Hull (at the last count 4 - Me, Eris, Tabitca and Online Again.) Me and Kaz hit upon the idea to form a society of our own but we'd buck the trend and call ourselves the "h2g2 towel" and wait for people to ask us why...

As far as I'm aware, there's only one other h2g2er currently at Nottingham, and I'm the one who made him join...

There are some Nottingham graduates floating around though, and at least one resident of the area...
