Hi Cyzaki,

Dunno if it might be worth mentioning the books of Malcom Saville. His Priciple works included The Lone Pine Club, about a group of children who formed a secret society in wartime Shropshire. I loved reading these as a kid, and learning about places such as Long Mynd etc.

Also, RAF Shawbury, just outside Shrewsbury, is the home of the RAF's Air Traffic Control School. (Spent a happy fortnight's camp there with the Air Cadets when I were a lad)

Looks good Cyzaki smiley - ok

As the only areas I know at all are Shrewsbury and Ironbridge I'll leave any comments to residents.

PS You didn't mention The Stiperstones which, at 530 metres above sea level, are perhaps Shropshire's best-known landmark. Also, the The Devil's Chair is a rocky outcrops along the ridge that forms the Stiperstones.
(I remember reading about both of these in Malcomb Saville's books)

(Apparently, The Stiperstones Inn was voted Best Pub in Shropshire in 1999)

By the way, as this is a collaborative entry, I'll be adding anyone who contributes something that gets included to the researcher list. You're welcome to take your names off if you don't want them there, or I'll remove them for you if you wish. smiley - biggrin

I would put it under the 'Shrewsbury' Header at the end of para 1, ie' as a new para after the sentence about angling.

I can't find much about RAF Shrewsbury - do you mean RAF Shawbury, or RAF Cosford?

I still think it' would be a good idea to spell out thar RAF Shawbury is the home of the School of Air Traffic Control. Furthermore, the RAF Museum, Cosford isn't just any old museum, has one of the largest aviation collections in the UK, with over 60 historic aircraft.

Hi there, smiley - smiley
While on the flying theme I remember spending a great fortnight at The Midland Gliding Club which was at the top of The Long Mynd which you mention briefly. I believe that the club still operates from there. The scenery and the walking in that part of the world was beautiful.
All the best with this entry,
DK

Hi again,
I'm glad to have been able to contribute. I hope that the one I'm working on comes out as well as this. Thanks for the credit but there's really no need for something as small as this.

I think it's worthwhile saying a bit more about MoD Donnington ie What is its role?

Select from:

MoD Donnington is the home of the Army Base Repair Organisation (ABRO), which has several strategically located sites around the country.

ABRO is the UK MoD's key engineering service provider. Customers include the British Armed Forces, local and overseas governments and Emergency Services.

Capabilities range from small arms to main battle tanks, and commercial fleet vehicles to thermal imaging equipment.
