Talking Point: How to Get on With Your Flatmates

20 Conversations

This time of year many young people are currently looking at moving away from home for the first time and sharing a flat with friends or fellow students. Sharing a home with others can be difficult; some people are noisy, others are untidy, some are just a pain in the rear. If you're sharing you have to get along with everyone else, or you'll become unhappy in your own home. But how to do it?

So can you offer any good tips on how to get along with each other?

  • Who does the housework? Should you set up a rota?
  • What do you do about noise levels or contrasting music tastes?
  • What about the television? Football or opera, who decides?
  • Who gets the comfortable armchair?
  • Friends sleeping on the sofa? How long a stay is acceptable?
  • Sex. Visiting girlfriends and boyfriends can cause problems; any advice?
  • Entertaining. You want a quiet night in; your flatmates want a party. Is there a solution?
  • Food. Do you share the cooking? Buy your own food? Or just eat your flatmates' food and save money?
