I think the "this" in the following should "thing";
"The surprising this is that it seems to work as a model for some types of tasks."
Sorry if I seem like I'm looking for things that are just minor errors, but they do need to be corrected at some point and how can that be done if everyone remains polite and doesn't mention them as being too small to be worthy of notice.
