No he didn't set the longest held Olympic record. I'm pretty sure that his time was beaten in the 1964 Olympics. The times for the race can vary quite considerably based upon whether it is a tactical race or an out and out race for the line.

I'll give you a second clue. Try studying the timeS for the 1960 race, and compare them to the previous Olympic record.

The first 6 (at least) of 1960 were faster than all previous records.

Herb's time was beaten by the winner only three times since then.

And having 6 (or possibly 7 depending upon which version of Ron Delaney's time you believe) athletes beat a previous Olympic record is unprecedented in the history of Olympic track & field.

Q1: What was Alaric I most famous for?

Marjin, After a long time of procrastination back lurking

Capturing and sacking Rome I presume

King of the Visigoths 395-410
Alaric I inherited the kingdom when the Visigoths lived on the delta of the Danube river. Due to Hunnic attacks, they were pushed west. In 394, the Visigoths allied with Rome, and Alaric led the Visigoths in the Roman army against the Huns. When the Roman Emperor Theodosius I died in 395 and divided the empire, the Visigoths renounced their allegiance with Rome. After ravaging the Empires, Alaric was defeated by General Flavius Stilicho. He then received from the Eastern Emperor Arcadius the command of the province of Illyricum. In 402, Alaric again invaded Italy, and was again defeated by Stilicho. After allying himself with the Western Emperor Honorius, and the execution of Stilicho, Alaric in 410 sacked and captured the city of Rome itself. Alaric's death stopped him from carrying out his next campaign; to Sicily and north Africa.
