Out the window of the tavern a ships dingy can be seen being rowed rather inexpertly to the wharf. After a few comical attempts to come alongside the occupant finally ties off and steps on the wharf. An uncommonly tall gentleman with a in one hand and what appears to be a tucked under the other arm starts unsteadily up the lane toward the tavern door.

As the tall stranger reaches the door it becomes obvious to those few paying attention that his unsteadyness is not really due to too much but more to his attempts to dance the hornpipe while singing the Muppets pirate song from Treasure Island.
opens the door while reaching the final lines:

reminds me of the Larson cartoon about alligators
'bobbing for poodles' at halloween.

Having spent the better part of an hour trying to combine bobbing for poodles, the ocean and the phrase salty dogs in a witty remark without success I change from to hoping for inspiration from hops.
