Lansing is in Michigan, as is the small town where my mother grew up. When she married my father and moved to Massachusetts, she should have been moving to a different time zone, right?

wrong. You would think that they were far enough apart but both are in the eastern time zone.
As I say check http://wwwtimeanddate.com if you want to see where something lies.

i can't do that, Shagbark, because of something called "Sonicwall" that blacks the link on my work computer.
The Bridge

and I presume that you have no other computer available.
Luckily I am working from a home computer where I am the administrator so I can declare exceptions when something won't come up.

I have bookmarked that link too Shagbark - thanks, it has helped me find out the time in Japan - as I am supposed to meet a friend online for a chat, and keep missing her. I knew it was a 9 hour difference between there and the uk, but which way? Now, I know

*peers over the rail* I can't see anything from here, I'm going to The Nest for a better look.

I joined the Navy to see the world,
And what did I see? I saw the sea.
See one sea, you've seen them all.

i beg to differ. seas can be very different
for instance the entrance to napoli, italy, is usually much more comfy than sailing around the horn

Apparently some of the oceans have trash vortexes now.
You may be right, Pierce, especially if you include the Dead Sea and the Saltan Sea.

i did not know of the salton sea. does not look inviting
the dead sea however is good for psoriatics

and seas and oceans are really different colours from each other, some are a muddy grey ( the English Channel for instance ) The Aegean is the most beautiful almost purplish blue. Around the coast in the north of Lanzarote, the sea is a turquoise green, with electric blue flashes.
I adore the sea - it is my passion, I'd like to travel on all the world's oceans.

writes in diary for the year 2059, Pierce's Ashes to be strewn from the stern deck ( whatever the name for that might be ) of The Blood.
Full honours, Flint to be in his best regalia, blah, blah etc etc

Actually Captain? which deck would be best? I don't want a faceful of your ashes blown all over my best breeches and lace...

When I die, I want my ashes to be sprinkled over Loni Anderson.
(That's a joke. If she dies first, I don't know if she'd want her ashes sprinkled over me--nor do I want to ask her. There must be millions of guys who would want the same thing if she agreed, and she might not have enough ashes for everyone....
