Hi there furtim! Welcome! *waves*
I'll add you to the list when I'm online again later (I'm sneaking on at school right now, don't tell anybody!).

Oh, I won't tell. I'm known to do it myself at times. Sometimes when I'm supposed to be in class! (hehe. now that's one I REALLY don't want to be told. )

Hehehe. My lips are sealed, fellow victim of mindless academic boredom! What class?
Oh, and what school, by the way?

It was an animation class. The teacher told us how to do the animation in Flash, and I finished it early.
I've gone back to school part time to earn my bachelor's degree in Visual Communications. I'm going to SUNY Farmingdale. It's close to work, so it's easy to take a class and pop right over to start work.

Anything would be better than my drawing class. The teacher only says negative things and scribbles on my shetches. Is that true of all male art teachers?

No, that's just frustrated art teachers in general. You know, the kind that see more talent in their students than they'll ever dream of having, and so must crush and discourage said students so they won't compete with them!

Actually, that's not so much "frustrated art teachers" as, well, "people".
Many people like to think that they own the world, or something. And when they find out they don't, the rest of us had better get out of their way!
The best way to avoid becoming such a person is to completely ignore non-constructive criticism. And YES, it IS that easy! If there's anything we humans can consistently control, it's our own patterns of thought, provided we're actually willing to change.

I've never liked art classes that much... in elementary school I never got to make anything interesting and in middle school the teacher wouldn't let me be creative... But I like sketching-that's fun!

I was lucky enough to have a very non-frustrated art teacher for a year and a half. If I improved my drawing skills at all, it's no longer noticeable, but I still have very fond memories of that class and that teacher, who was just a wonderful woman. It's a terrible shame, but she died maybe a year after I last took that class. *sigh*

I cannot remember taking an art class growing up. There may have been one in elementary school, but I have no idea. It's probably a good thing to because I have enough trouble with handwriting and drawing a stick figure.

every art teacher i've ever met has been weird. just odd. eccentric maybe? strange. from their mannerisms to their wardrobes, just a bit off-center from the word go. has anyone else ever noticed this?

Yeah, absolutely an artist thing. Even marginal artists like me (yes, musicians count!) have their strange idiosyncracies.

It is most definitely an thing! I've worked in art departments for 20 years, and went to art school for 15 years.
I remember my father telling me that in "normal" offices the workers didn't dress up in costumes all the times to have theme parties. How boring is that?
