A Conversation for Radiohead - The Band that gave a voice to Alienation

Radiohead are indeed an almighty band. I'm going to next month's oxford gig which should be pretty amazing.
Just a quick point - i think Exit Music was written for Romeo + Juliet. I know it was on the soundtrack, and some of the lyrics seem to fit (pack and get dressed before your father hears us, etc.)
But yeah, amazing band.

Not certain but I always assumed it was a child abuse thing. (we hope your rules and wisdom chokes you etc.) I had a long discussion with someone once about how Thom Yorke actually has the aura of a person who was abused as a child..and I'm sure he wouldn't like us saying this..but it definitely comes through in his songs

Maybe...i just took it as being about Romeo and Juliet as the song actually was the exit music for the R+J film (the one with Leo di Caprio in). But it may well have just been a coincidence.
Incidentely, did you watch that BBC 2 live Radiohead thing? I thought it was really good - seriously looking forward to next month's gig now.
Have you thought about adding some stuff about the non-album Radiohead tracks (Talk Show Host, The Trickster etc.) to your entry?
Agreed

I'm still considering adding the tracks from the American My Iron Lung album, which includes trickster, as for other tracks..I would consider it, but a) Napster seems to not like me anymore..I've only been able to download a minimal amount of stuff..including a realy poor recording of a radiohead song (something to do with alligators in New York Sewers) b)I really think I want to leave it focusing on the main albums, although Sick Bob has suggested that he help me with a track by track review..I think that would make for a really boring repetitious article...if only because there's only so much you can write about a hundred or more songs by the same band without starting to repeat yourself...and anyway..everyone has different opinions about each song...for example I hate Planet Telex for an undefined reason..but others I know love it.
Anyway, the articles been reccomended now (as it has been for ages) and I don't want to make any major changes. As for the My Iron Lung album I think I'll leave it out..as it doesn't have a very cohesive sound...it sounds more like a bundle of songs from between the Bends and OK Computer without managing to sound like an ALBUM in the way the others do..there's nothing pulling it all together. Having said that the track Lewis (Mistreated) is awesome..and one of my favourite Radiohead tracks...if just for two killer guitar riffs and a generally ebullient riftyness to it (don't ask). Also the album is notable for the acoustic version of creep...accenting Thom Yorkes solo brilliantly, but also producing one of the most amusing pieces of editing ever in a song..as the first f*****g is replaced by a really deep and out of place very..that made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it..its so poorly done. Another interesting thing about the album is that Nigel Godrich produces more of the tracks on the album, which can only be a good thing as we all know.
I was immensely p****d off to find I had gone to the cinema with my girlfriend on the night of the Live TV thing of RAdiohead..and please don't mention the gig...I failed to get tickets...and I've wanted to see Radiohead live for such a long time it isn't even remotely funny.
And having listened to it again I do hear how Exit Music's lyrics works well for the film..but I think its more valid if we put it down to child abuse....especially as its one of my favourite songs and i prefer to think of it as having more meaning that what Baz Luhrmann (well ok..technically William Shakespeare) attaches to it...anybody have conclusive proof????

Hello,
I read in an article that Exit Music was written as a Romeo and Juliet inspired song before the film was produced and then tacked onto the soundtrack because, well the producers could. Aparently Thom had been obsessed with the whole idea of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet for a while and finally got inspired to write a song about it in the OK Computer sessions. For more definative information on the band and their music I suggest you look in the best damn Radiohead fansite in existance

... It is a bloody good site with masses of information and links about the band.
Great article by the way...
Cheers.

Exit music was halfway through be written and unnamed when Baz Lurhman asked Radiohead if he could use Talk show host on the soundtrack but since the song was actually about Romeo and Juliet, he used that too. That's the story I heard.
About child abuse. Thom always appears like an abused child but constantly argues that he was treated well through his childhood. Although it's hard to beleive that he wasn't bullied at school esp. with the eye. I think that Pearly* (from How an I driving and Running from demons EP's which are also worth a mention although almost identical) is about child abuse because though. Pearly is one of those great "lost songs" that only turn up as B-sides but are better than most albums tracks and are live favourites (played brilliantly on Glasgow Green last year)
Other songs which must be mentioned just for their pure quality are Lewis (mistreated), the trickster, punchdrunk lovesick singalong, A reminder, polyethelene (parts 1&2), Bishops robes, Maquilordora and inside my head (live.) I had to get these on a bootleg but if was worth it. Go looking.

I need a little Radiohead adviceā¦
I'd finally scraped together enough money to buy Kid A, and then Amnesiac comes out and now I want them both! Any advice as to which I should buy/listen to first?

The best songs in Amnesiac (I might be wrong/Pyramid song) are better than the best songs on Kid A (idioteque/Optimistic) in my opinion (although How to disapear... is one of the best songs they've ever written I think but it takes a while to get used to) However the bad "songs" on Amnesiac (Pull/pulk revolving doors?!!!) are some of the worst things I've ever heard (makes the "song" Kid A seem normal). It's a matter of choice. I suggest you save up your cash untill you can buy both. They're both only a tenner each in Fopp or little independent stores. You won't be disspointed with either if you are willing to give them the time they need (some tracks need a bit of settling) but you will regret not having the other.

Amnesiac! So Nerrr back!
(unless you don't already have either OK computer or The Bends because that would be blasphemy. Also if you get a chance buy the Led Zepplin Remastered Singles double disc. You won't be dissapointed. 26 tracks of mad alt/prog/stadium guitar rock. Jimmy Page is god.)

Ok right..let me revise..If you want one of the greatest most original album ever created go for Kid A. If you want something almost as good..but 'easier to digest' and slightly more rocky, go for Amnesiac
and nerrrrrrrrr
