can someone explain this fancy dress thing to a helpless american? does that mean 'formal', or 'masquerade'?

I'm a helpless American, but I work in events, and I consider fancy dress synonymous with black tie or formal; the other is a costume party, a masquerade, or a beaux arts ball. Feel free to call me on that.
Cider anyone?

Well as a Brit it's my understanding that formal means formal, and fancy dress means silly - cowboy outfits, fairy wings, halos, Darth Vader suits, the works.

Dr E Vibenstein (You know it is, it really is.) Posted Dec 3, 2000
But I look pretty silly most of the time anyway, so it doesn't matter much to me.

this was exactly the problem i was having.... so can someone tell me whether i need to dust off my prom dress, or put together some other outrageous concoction? i don't mind participating, but who's culture are we using?

or if it's costume, I suppose I could wear your prom dress...

::laughs at Marc::
I'd like to see that!!!
::laughs some more, then stops suddenly and gives Marc that "Be-nice when-talking-about-Paul-McCartney" look::
I think fancy dress goes for formal attire as well as crazy masquerade-esque wear... I'll e-mail the POST right now to report that the Three Nights of Fancy Dressing will take place December 15, 16, and 17... how's that!??

broelan Posted Dec 4, 2000

Oh no! Not that look again... I'm sorry for offending you Mother...
And am I going to have to wear a tux or a dress to this thing? I'm still confused...
Uhh I don't think I know "Pretty Paper"... I can play "Pretty Noose" though, and attempt to sing it kinda like Soundgarden... will that work?

You can dress like the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, if you like!!!
I told the POST that limited HALLOWEEN costumes will be all right, but fancy dress-- like ballgowns and tzues, are preferred....
....Can't believe you won't sing your mother's FAVORITE Chrsitmas tune to her...

Heya you guys know how I said I'd go and form my own pro-80's music country? Well I did. And I got a little carried away with the country's charter and title, but you know how it goes... so now I need masses to repress! Who wants to be a peasant in The United Conglomerated Amalgamated Integrated Unified Redundancy Land of Redundantly Repetitive Repitition? Come on I know you're all dying to join, you're just afraid of the citizenship exams... well trust me, they're pretty much non-existent...

"OOOOOPPP's! I can see I have been misunderstood across the pond. I guess spending all those years in England has really put me out of touch with North America, not to forget South America. For fancy dress read the same as the mascarade, but that does'nt rule out ballgowns and tuxedo's for all the cross dressers out there." Dragonfly you spend too much time in bars for a young lady. See you at the Tequila Sunrise. BTW do you think you could stand under that mistletoe again for an hour or six."
