what is the meaning of life?

Soccer can only exist within the boring life of a human.
If you want soccer then enter 'soccer' in the search box top LH corner of this page.
Consider that earth and the life on it may not have been created with the human in mind. Soccer and all forms of human experience then pale into insignificance.
It may well be that the true meaning of life will always be beyond the range of human comprehension.
what is the meaning of life?

The football conversation *was* about some people's meaning of life - all the fans who came here to watch the match, for example. Okay, it was a light-hearted comment as I'm sure they have other things in their lives that provide meaning (maybe not?).
Can there be a 'true' meaning of LIFE that is not personal? I don't think so.

Hi az.
My post was intended to help those who live, eat, and sleep soccer.
They could express that interest in their personal space and talk about it to their hearts content. Just tried to suggest to them that there are other things in life.
As you say the topic is all embracing. That's life.
Your final sentence goes to confirm the final sentence of my post.
With regard to 42. This was Deep Thought's provocative answer to the question of Life the Universe and Everything. An answer that may well have some bearing on a true meaning of life if you ponder the implication long enough.

But what is really more important to our lives than what we enjoy?
what is the meaning of life?
azahar Posted May 23, 2003
N1NJ4,
What's more important than what we enjoy?
Well, for starters, things that we *should* be doing as being a part of the world we live in. We don't live in a vaccuum. We live on a living planet that we are daily killing off more and more - mostly due to just doing things we enjoy without thinking about the consequences of our actions.
When I talk about 'life-affirming experiences' I'm not just talking about things that make us feel good. Sometimes the most 'real' experiences we have are quite unpleasant, but we can learn from them.
We don't treat our planet with much respect, which makes me wonder how it will be able to survive much longer.

Az - as an occasional Gaiaist, I beg to differ ...
Compare -
Gaia is real: we mistreat the planet, bad karma coming down.
Gaia isn't real - how do you give humans a chance of surviving without a planet? Planets can live without us. Not vice versa.
We don't treat our planet with respect, which makes me wonder how *we* will be able to survive much longer.

Could life be an experiment gone ballistic to find the answer to the meaning of life?
We seem too involved in getting this answered than would seem approriate...
Anyways, back to work...

Not to sound like an environment hater, but what is the effect of our world dieing? Even if it takes us with it there is no real effect on a large scale. We have to die eventually, along with everything else.

It's a moral thing, albeit one more strongly imprinted than most on the oral circuit. A Native American said something about it being the mother or something, but I've forgotten.

Fnord,
Planets can live without us? Not at the rate we're going. At least, not this planet. Though perhaps you are right that all our attempts to murder our planet will only end up killing us off and the planet will eventually recuperate and continue on.

N1NJ4,
If you don't want to sound like an environment hater, then you shouldn't speak like one.

what is the meaning of life?
Mal Posted May 24, 2003
No, see, the way I see it is :
a) You do believe in Gaia, so you believe she'll recuperate, and try to help her anway
b) You do believe in Gaia, so you believe she needs help or she'll die and we'll die too.
c) You do believe in Gaia, so if we continue like this, she'll get angry and kill us.
d) You do believe in Gaia, and don't care.
e) You don't believe in Gaia, but you feel morally obliged to help anway.
f) You don't believe in Gaia, but you feel morally obliged to help anway, or we'll die without the planet.
g) You don't believe in Gaia, and you don't care what happens to it.
So only 2/7 types of people aren't going to do nuffin. Yay. Like This Other Eden.

I don't hate the environment but I don't see any huge meaning for it, at least none bigger than the meaning of ourselvs.

Then you claim you have no objections to hurting yourself?

N1NJ4. Posted May 27, 2003
No, but I shouldn't, just because it is human nature doesn't mean its right.

So now you're claiming you can define a character to cover every homo sapiens everywhere?
what is the meaning of life?
N1NJ4. Posted May 28, 2003
Yes, we all want to have sex don't we?
of course I don't mean everyone but in general, we do.
what is the meaning of life?
Mal Posted May 28, 2003
By using the term "In general" you are implicitly covering everyone. Do you mean on average, then?
So what you are saying is that you can merely define a character for every *living creature* ever, and not just every homo sapiens?

That really disturbs me, N1NJ4. Actually, Satori was wondering about what a person tastes like, maybe you two should talk.....
