what is the meaning of life?
Margarita Posted May 28, 2003
Wow, I think I should have read the end of this conversation before I posted...I was responding to an earlier comment. Not every person wants to have sex, there are plenty of people who were raped or sexually molested that are terrified of sex and want nothing to do with it. There are also those who are disgusted with the entire act. And then there are those who aren't. It just depends on you and your situation, I guess is all I'm trying to say.

I didn't say that everyone wants to have sex with who they have sex with, I meant to say that as animals, one of our main goals is to reproduce and further the life of our species.
Who is satori?

what about the spiritual meaning to a physical existence isn't there a lot more to sex than animal procretion for example?

Margarita Posted May 29, 2003
Sorry, forgot again. Satori is a Japanese male name. Anyway, undoubtedly you are right, the main "function" of humans, and other animals, is to reproduce. I have a question for you then, anyone who wants to answer. Why do only two species, humans and dolphins, derive pleasure from it? Why don't other species? And how in the world did they make that discovery? Just kind of curious.
I also did not say that the only people who don't want to have sex are the ones who were forced to have sex with someone they didn't want to. There are some people who choose to be celibate(sp?)for different reasons, religion yadayadayada, and also because they don't WANT to reproduce. Just a thought.

Animals supposedly have sex for the sole purpose of reproduction. Humans romanticize sex by calling it "making love" because it personalizes it, you can have sex with anyone but you only make love to someone you love. It's a very fine difference but it's very different at the same time.

dolphins and humans have pleasure centres in brain for sex.
Probably because if we didn't we'd see how ridiculous it looks in principle and stop doing it and take up rowing

Of course, duhh. That is what we want more than anything else. If eating didn't give us pleasure, we wouldn't do it. Same with breathing. It is what drives everything we do

Margarita Posted May 29, 2003
I personally wouldn't take up rowing, but that's interesting about the pleasure centers. Why don't other species have them? Usually Nature has one system that works and sticks to it, generally again not in every case. Why make 99.9% of Earth's species instinctively have sex and only two have sex for pleasure?

hi N1NJ4,
Actually, even if you derived no pleasure from eating, you would still have to do it in order to survive. Though it is quite true that humans have turned eating into a form of pleasure as well.
Ummm, I rather don't think of breathing as a pleasure thing, though of course it is more pleasurable than not breathing and dying.

hi Moth
(long time no see!)
I believe that whales also have sex for pleasure, but could be wrong about that. I remember reading something about certain whales having very elaborate and sensual mating stuff going on (well and above what 'needs' to be done just to procreate).
Yes, you are right. The two-backed beast is often quite a laughable sight!

as the intelligence grows, so does the idea that sex is really a bit funny in the way we go about it.
now there has to be a 'reward' to reproduce.
Plus child birth isn't that fantastic and perhaps at one point the female of the species got so intelliegent she actually clued up to what was causing it and discovered the word "no" - which is also a good method of birth control if you live in a cave and the food supply is diminishing.
We 'civilised' ourselves into family groups (for the benefit of the survival of the child) and moved on from the casual/rape kind of gang bang and so only those who actually evolved a sex/brain pleasure centre bothered to do it. The others died out or wore chastity belts

Hi Az
How you doing?
Come to think about it in some cases, for the female when times are hard, the meaning of life is NOT to reproduce.

az,
If we didn't get any pleasure from eating, why would we do it. We wouldn't know that we should until we died. It would have to be some sort of an instinct where you would see food and eat it.
(this would be funny, everyone would be fat!!)

Yes - two backed beast.
whenever I've 'accidently' seen a prono film i can't help but find it funny.
Perhaps there's something wrong with me

Whether they like it or not most forms of life have to breath and eat as a matter of survival. Its a similar thing with sex. Conclusion, if you have to do it make it a pleasurable experience.

azahar Posted May 29, 2003
N1NJ4,
That is such a silly thing to say - that if we didn't get any pleasure from eating then why would we do it? I've seen street people eating garbage out of bins and I don't think they are getting any pleasure out of this. They are doing it because they are really really hungry. And we all must eat to survive - just like we all have to breathe to survive. No, we don't all have to have sex to survive, and in fact when one is starving the last thing on their minds (I suppose) is their next lay.
I think you are just being sarcastic and silly.

hi Moth,
I think you are right that - in nature - when times are tough (no food supply, not enough water, etc) the tendency is not to reproduce as much as in times of abundance.
Am imagining all sorts of animals taking up rowing - quite a funny image.
Yes, porn. It all just looks so silly as *only* a physical act. And about as sexy as a bag of squirming eels. Ho hum.
