An assumption on your part, and as with most assumptions yours is incorrect as well. I like to know where my dollars are going, and sometimes it's easy to spot the ones who rip others off-in this case they even pay for the call.

Isn't that what Benjamin Franklin said? 'There are only two things that are certain in this world: death and taxes.'

My favorite god was on Radio 4 last night at 11pm. The 'Great God Om' in the first part of Pratchett's 'Small Gods'. You can listen to it @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/smallgods/pip/383o1/

I really loved the fact that until the Humanist Society approached her she did not realise she WAS a humanist. Though it was more that her views echoed their views. As I hate labels about who one is, we are simply human beings.
As the Humanist website says
I would say it is a FACT that we can live good lives without religious beliefs! Look at all the well-adjusted people who do not follow religions and there is your cast iron proof.
Lindas strong political views will have made her an excellent figure head for the group.
Oh, and of course, I'm going to miss her.

I first encountered them when as a friend's funeral was done by them. Was surprised at the time as hadn;t encountered them before but found it very relevant and far more meaningful.

I am always puzzled about having a 'humanist' funeral. Why 'get' someone else to do it for you? It is a bad as rent-a-vicar funerals who basically act exactly like consultants:-
1) You hire the vicar
2) He rings you up and asks what the person was like etc relationships, quirks etc what songs they want.
3) They get one of their set pattersheets.
4) Fill in the blanks
5) Tell you exactly what you said to them on the phone(the first time my mum saw the vicar for her mums funeral was at the funeral)
6) You pay vicar for telling you what you told him.
Now, why get humanists involved? If its humanist then presumably you have sorted out the coffin(or biodegradable box) the place its going to happen so just sort out the service. Pick the songs, ask a few friends to say some words and burr/cremate them.
I would want no-one involved in my funeral apart from my friends and family and hopefully after a few nice words there would be an extended section on how stupid I have been sometimes and see me off with a damn good laugh.
Oh, and everyone has to dress up as penguins!
HAs anyone had a funeral that involved now 3rd parties?

Thanks Rev Alan...so not that much different to a religious service then still costs ya!
*writes down another requirement of my funeral: everyone must where mohhammed masks with their penguin costumes and the flippers must have stigmata and they have to wear a horned helmet(well, the Norse Gods need to be there!)*

And just because you dont belive in god, you dont HAVE to be Satanist (and workship the devil), you can be a Atheist and belive there is nothing out there. There is a diference!
If you belive in the devil, you allso bellive in God. If you belive i God you allso bellive in the devil.

Ok, you replied to the first post in this thread. However, the topic has drifted somewhat since then. Plus, I do believe post #1 was actually sarcastic, if you read again it was evidently written by someone who believed in neither God nor the Devil and was making exactly your point .
Welcome to h2g2 .
