Hmmmm. Isn't that post-modernism in the extreme form? "I'm incredibly cynical about my country, dislike its policies, its government and most of its people, but I also love it as an ideological concept representing freedom and justice and will defend it to the metaphorical death"? Or is that just ironic?

*Tail of green fire boils into sky, explodes in dark blue and red lights which crackle loudly and then fade away. Smoking remains of rocket plumet to earth and thud in ground*
KABOOM!
Evening all

Of course, one of the more amusing things about
America is that the national anthem ("Star-
Spangled Banner") is so difficult for most
people to sing. Unlike Russia, we have not
tried hard enough to replace it with something
easier to sing. I don't know what the stumbling
bloock is. The tune to SPB was an English
drinking song, I think. "America the Beautiful,"
set to the tune "Materna" (don't ask me what THAT
is ), is a perennial favorite, while Irving
Berlin's "God Bless America" is entirely original
as well as having been written in America.
(By the way, I'm not saying there's anything
wrong with English drinking songs per se.
But America has been around long enough to
have produced some wonderful music that *might*
be worthy of serving as a national anthem.
When Austria lost its Haydnesque national anthem
to Germany, there were plenty of other nice tunes
to fill the gap--the one they've got now is
from a Masonic cantata by Mozart. Switzerland,
I believe, uses the same tune as "God Save
the King/Queen".)
I hope that wasn't too preachy. I just want
everybody to have fun.
