Hey, ma!
Came to see the fireworks. I love that song, always wondered if it's called Vincent, or Starry, starry Night.
Does any of you know?

If you mean the Don McLean one, I think it's just called Vincent. Though the 'starry starry night' is indeed the refrain.
Quite what that's got to do with fireworks....
*gets out her guitar and picks out the intro, waiting for folks to join in the singing*...
(though I'll refrain from quoting the lyrics in case it's some breach of some copyright and some moderator gets nervous and removes this posting, which I really don't want to happen. By the way, I'm going to have to babble on for a bit, coz I'm aiming to get back into the "researchers with the longest postings" list, and if I make this one too short, then it'll seriously drop my average down. So feel free to stop reading about now and just ignore the rest of this. It's 1.30am anyway, and I'm tired, so what I'll come up with, goodness only knows.)
Hmmm. What to talk about. Other songs about fireworks? Anyone here know Aimee Mann's "4th of July"? There's also "3rd of July" by now-defunct-but-always-obscure Atlanta band the Jody Grind ...and Bruce Springsteen has a song about the fifth of July doesn't he?
Why do these pesky yanks bother to celebrate some minor war anyway? (Ooooh controversy!)
OK, that should do it. I wish there were a word count on these. I s'pose I could highlight everything and paste it into Word, but that'd require opening up Word to begin with, and with my incredibly slow computer that'd take an age, and it's now 1.34 and I ought to be asleep, and can't be bothered.
and to anyone who's read this far.

Maybe they're perpetual fireworks?
First Mardi Gras, now Fourth of July, soon to be Bastille Day,
and then on to Guy Fawkes Day. Then Mardi Gras again.
That way, anyone can come up here to enjoy them.
Got a quilt with picnic stripes.
The menu:
some devilled eggs
and salmon salad and green peas
(my grandmother's recipes; they make me feel young again )
Dessert? Blackberry buckle with lemonade.
(Reminds me of picking blackberries with my
sister in the orchard across the street when we
were kids. So many happy memories; now the
orchard is a housing development.....)
If any of our French friends come up here
for their Bastille Day holiday on the 14th,
I can dig out my copy of the Marseillaise.
Look, fireflies (also known as lightning bugs)!
They're here to help. Let's give them a hand

Those are fireflies, my dear lovely!!! The fireworks won't start up for about 24 more hours...
Paul H!!! Perpetual Fireworks are a great idea!!!
Inanna-- what IS your bedtime!?? I know how you feel about having to reach your h2g2 goals-- I overachieved yesterday with 244 postings in 24 hours!!! HOW DISGUSTING!!!
As for the Yankees wanting everyone to know about their Independece Day, well, why not!?? From my history classes it has been brought to my attention that the American Revolution really wasn't a revolution-- it was just a civil war. I can agree with that. We're not a very unique or innovative bunch-- names of cities and states come from Native American or Mexican languages, and our political system had plenty to do with the ideas of the people ALREADY living here!!! SO THERE!!! Americans are awfully big-headed.... and our school system stinks, and most of our television programs do too... and I almost typed "programmes" instead of "programs". I think I've been having out with the British Islanders for too long...
The Fourth of July is probably given a lot of recognition(pleasant, patriotic and otherwise) because we're a nation that pumps out so much information... And maybe if we stopped pumping so much out and started to take more IN, we'd be a better country as a whole, do you think!??
Just like a rebellious teenager... get all independent and then stop listening to the advise of others altogether...
...Pink Lemonade anyone!??
I love the blackberry stuff, Paul!!!

well you don't sound very patriotic! god(doesn't matter which one, just a god, maybe one of the Greek ones) bless america, land of the lawsuit!(tho that doesn't make as much sense out of the context of the Bloom County comic, i've just been dying to say it) *waves around a little flag really fast*

Hey, if you're working on UK time, it's only 3 hours to go.
And if you're working on Aussie time, it's already the 4th!
*squints up at the sky in antici...pation*
