The Unreal Engine

Ok folks, after having read the article about the new Unreal Engine, I'm sure you'ld just love a thread where you can comment on its pure wonderfulness!
Well, here it is!

Well being fairly involved in the level editing side of The Wheel of Time (www.wheeloftime.com), which uses the Unreal engine to wonderful effect, I'm very much looking forward to the new Unreal engine, as it bodes well for the possible future release of Wheel of Time 2. Oh, it's so gorgeous!
It's a shame Wheel of Time 2 isn't a certaintly, though. Boo hoo.

Wheel of Time eh? Haven't heard of that...I'll go and have a look...
You're right - the new engine boasts loads of oportunities for new games based on it, and loads of mods...

The current one's good enough, although I think Mods for Wheel of Time can be slightly more difficult than for Unreal Tournament, since UT seems to be designed for the things. But we'll see how it goes when Shadowed Destiny is released (not long now!) Of course, most of the Wheel of Time mods at the moment are really single-player expansion packs, but they also add weaponry and multiplayer stuff too. Shadowed Destiny is supposed to allow six-team Citadel levels! Woohoo! (only on a broadband connection though).

'tis indeed. Until (like me) you start writing new ter'angreal (weaponry, basically) and run into a problem in that your graphic effects only show up on the highest detail settings, which most people can't use. This is very annoying.
The Unreal Engine
Chris Tonks Posted Oct 3, 2000
Oh...hmmm....
Well, people should only play these games with decent graphics cards, which go to those settings...
Something from the Voodoo series perhaps? Yum...

MaW Posted Oct 5, 2000
I have a Voodoo4 but my processor still has to do some working out of what to tell the card to draw, which means I still have a limit on detail levels - but then maybe one day I can get something better than a K6-2 333.

I used to get by on software rendering. It ain't great but it works better than Direct3D on a Riva128, believe me.

Chris Tonks Posted Oct 5, 2000
LOL: Half-Life hates Direct3D on Voodoo cards...but the 3DFX driver does a neat job...
I love the bit at the end of the Unreal Tech article: it states that the new engine (yes, with all the extra polies on the models, and the terrian) will work on any computer that can run normal Unreal...
Great eh?
The Unreal Engine
Chris Tonks Posted Oct 6, 2000
I hope quite well...
They've got their special poly-reduction methods for the models, dependng on what distance they are from the player, so maybe they could use the same thing, but depending on what system performance they have...
...the terrain oughtn't be a problem, because it's a whole new type of calculation...
...I hope...

MaW Posted Oct 6, 2000
Oh well. I might have a new CPU by then anyway. I hope I can find the money for it anyway. And with my Voodoo4 to handle the texturing, things should run quite nicely. High polygon counts really push the processor though.

Voodoo 4...yum...
I'm sure it'll work out...
...UPDATE:
I am now in the process of modelling the main areas of the Space Station Big C for Half-Life. It will include the Ministry of Science and Technology (thanks to MaW for the idea of modelling the Ministries for games), the Secondary Labs, the Great Hall, Hangars, and a visualisation of the Observatory, along with more details, and an outside tour of the 'station...
The levels will then be sealed off into seperate ones, and converted for multiplayer...

MaW Posted Oct 7, 2000
I think I've already said this to you, but have you any idea where I might get a 3D Tux model (preferably textured) in either unreal mesh format or 3DS?
Probably not...
The Unreal Engine
Chris Tonks Posted Oct 7, 2000
No, wouldn't know...sorry...
I'm right in the process of texturing a new H-L multiplayer model...me, Pr. C. Tonks!

Yeek!
I want to get the model they used for Tux in Tux Racer.
