A Conversation for The H2IQ Quiz - Be The First Among Equals
Sweet Tooth

Every week, after receiving his pocket money of one pound, Tubby Cartwright waddles off to the sweet shop, and blows the lot on whistling lollipops at ten pence each, chocolate bananas at three pence each and fizzy cola bottles at a ha'penny each, buying a total of one hundred sweets. How many of each does he buy?

I have two solutions, but you could discount one of them.
Either he buys 20 bananas (60p) and 80 cola bottles (40p).
Or if he has to buy at least one of each, then he buys 5 lollipops (50p), 1 banana (3p) and 94 cola bottles (47p)
I did this by fixing the number of lollipops (this can only be one of 11 discrete values, from 0 to 10). You then solve simultaneous equations for bananas and cola bottles, and see which solutions are in the domain of natural numbers. A spreadsheet makes this quicker.
The equations are (L = lollipops, B = bananas, C = cola bottles)
B=(100-19L)/5
C=100-L-B
Repeat for L in (0,1,2...10)

Hidden Songs

I posted a similar quiz on the other thread last week, but this one's a bit different.
You have to identify hit songs which are hidden inside the names of pop artists. The songs are all well-known - all have reached the top 10 in the UK chart, and there are many number ones in there too. The length of the song is in brackets.
Example: "Elvis Presley" (5) contains the hidden song "Lies" (eLvIs prESley)
You score one point for each you get, so it's a bit of a race. The winner is the first to score 11 points. You also win if your score can't be caught by anyone else.
On with the quiz...
1. Andy Fairweather Low (5)
2. Art Garfunkel (4)
3. Dexy's Midnight Runners (6)
4. Earth Wind & Fire (5)
5. Fairground Attraction (6)
6. Frankie Goes To Hollywood (6)
7. Generation X (4)
8. Hear'Say (4)
9. Long John Baldry (4)
10. Manic Street Preachers (7)
11. Paul McCartney & Wings (6)
12. Peter Sarstedt (5)
13. Rainbow (3)
14. Roman Holliday (5)
15. Sheryl Crow (4)
16. Sisters Of Mercy (5)
17. Talking Heads (4)
18. Vangelis (6)
19. Vic Reeves & The Roman Numerals (6)
20. Victoria Beckham (5)
Good luck,

18. Angels?
(Getting this in before anyone else, just in case...)

Minor deliberate mistake in my example. It should have read Elvis Presley (4)..., but I don't think it confused anyone, did it?

Sorry to be enigmatic, couldn't tell whether you were joking or not - Bryan McFadden has left Westlife.
Care?
