Each day a man's wife meets him at the railroad station and drives him home. One day he arrives at the station an hour early and begins to walk home along the road his wife always takes. She meets him en route and takes him the rest of the way home. Had he waited at the station, she would have picked him up exactly on time. As it turned out, he reached his home twenty minutes early. How long did the man walk?

He walked right up to the point where his wife ran him over with the car. He may never walk again. And there's some question if she'll ever be allowed to drive.

50 mins:

his walk plus the rest of the way home by car equals 40 minuts, plus the driving time of the walk plus the rest of the way home.
The driving time saved is 20 minutes, so half that is the driving time of the walk.. hense 50 minutes...

OK, here goes...

He arrives 1 hour early, but gets home 20 minutes early. Therefore he has 'lost' 40 minutes. His wife usually drives him home, adn she drives him part of the way today. Given that she would have arrived exactly on time, that means that the 40 minutes he's lost can only be accounted for by the time he spent walking.

Now, if someone will just explain the flaws in my reasoning, I can get on with the day...
