You know I'm still not convinced that 50 minutes is the right answer, but I can't work out why I'm not convinced smiley - erm

Paul Prefect (It's been 2 years now... wow... 8-))

*arrives hopelessly late and decides to try and score a semi-half-point with a semi-understandable explanation of the right answer... perhaps... smiley - winkeye*

OK... From the wife's point of view, she got home 20 minutes earlier than home... and since she didn't have to drive the distance from the train station to the point where she picked up her husband, it means that this point is a 10 minutes' drive from the train station. OK?

Now... since she'd have been on time if she hadn't met her husband along the way... she reached that point 10 minutes before the time her husband would normally arrive at the train station, i.e. if he arrives at 6, she reached that spot where she met him at 5:50... smiley - smiley

Therefore... since he arrived one hour early (at 5 in our example), he had been walking for 50 minutes to get to that point.. smiley - smiley Hope that makes sense......

smiley - ok

Why didn't he just take a taxi home? It would have saved an awful lot of bother.
