I think it may be to do with commemorative issues of something. Stamps? Unlikely because living people can't appear, cutting down on the number of footballers.

The final two in the list are "Saints" and "Thirty Comedians".

Now with that lot you can do it by brute force if need be. Trust me I've checked, its definitly do-able

I looked up Galileo. But I don't think he played football. Nor was he a comedian, let alone 30.

Italy seems to be the connection somehow - and possibly something historical - as that would include Marco Polo which takes us to China. Football probably came from China, too -brought, along with many other cultural goodies which Marco Polo gathred on his journey. (polo mints, polo-necks, water polo............)
