As you've referred to that particular 'hint' posting again I can no longer restrain myself from recommending the other title mentioned there, "A Fine and Private Place" by Peter S Beagle. It's a vaguely existential, non-denonminational and therefore slightly sci-fi interpretation of a possible after-life. No angels, no heavenly choir, but...
I read it about 25 years ago and it formed a large part of my 'hope' in this cruel and indifferent universe. This helped me get through the last quarter of the 2oth century. I re-read it a couple of years ago was amazed to realise how naive I used to be and just how cynical I have become. But I still have hope, and that's 'always' important for anyone, especially 'now'.

Interesting. Why hope 'especially now'? Reminds me of the famous vicar saying: "How true these words are - even today".

I went a googling one day and found this interesting site
http://www.usc.edu/dept/pubrel/trojan_family/autumn98/mailbag/mailbag_2.html
on borrowed titles.

Isn't this where Seamus is supposed to come back and declare a winner? Or at least clarify what's left to figger. What? You're all busy reading Peter S Beagle? Omigod what have I started .

Seamus...the forbidden Posted Oct 24, 2002
As you all know that all the writers in the bottom column have written books, whose titles are quotes take from works by those in the top column. Would it be too much to ask for somebody to list all the works by all the writers in either the top or bottom columns, ( or preferably both ), and not a mixture of the two which is what we have now?

They've been a bit slow on this one haven't they? Thanks for that criterion. I can breathe easy again.

I note that the question was posted 2 days ago. Is this a record for messing about instead of answering a question in this quiz?

Maybe this is what happens to the thread if *all* of the people using it are trying to avoid setting the next question.

Seamus,
before somebody comes along and gathers up all the partial answers into a 'final answer' I have to ask if you may have missed this posting from JDub Video:
Julia Ward Howe and John Steinbeck for "Grapes of Wrath"
Shakespear and Huxley for "Brave New World"
Thomas Gray and Thomas Hardy "Far from the madding crowd"
Alexander Pope and E.M. Foster for "Where angels fear to tread"
Andrew Marvell and Robert Penn Warren for "To His Coy Mistress"
Looks like all the right answers to me. Unless there's some question about the line 'World enough and time' being from Marvell's 'To His Coy Mistress'. It is:
http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/marvell/coy.htm
JDub's answer might have been better formatted to show the final titles derived but I assume since he named all the sources and did make all the paired connections that he knew what the Robert Penn Warren title is. Unless I'm missing something else (It COULD happen!)
I'd say JDub was the winner.
jwf - I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Jwf, it could be you! Nobody else has so far listed the lot including the correct Marvell - Warren connection.

I vote for jwf
If I'm going to depend on reading websites for my answers then I should at least finish reading them rather then just cutting and pasting. Besides, I really don't want to have to come up with a question as I just finished my logic test and can only think in symbols at the moment.
