*Glad you mentioned that Baggy; I agree you did answer the question correctly. Your subsequent faux pas, no doubt the result of over-eagerness to take a shot at our American friends, should not be held against you, if only because naming the countries and putting them in order was not part of the question.

However what?
By the way, did you get Mycroft's question right or are we still trying?

Sorry Bagpuss,
Yet again, I was in awe of Mycroft's capacity for recalling obscure information, which somehow blinded me.
Re-reading my question, I acknowledge that your answer was indeed correct, albeit it with some superfluous [and erroneous] guesswork.

Actually Mycroft answered his own question and me may be off celebrating his victory.
He explained that Timothy McNutcase was the only one he included because of the US 66 route. The only one to blow up a building too for that matter, so I guess that might also make him the unique one.
The fact that all the others have been known to wrestle doesn't seem to have impressed anyone as a distinguishing absence of character. So while I picked the right one, like you, I've spoiled my chances by giving incorrect back-up data top rationalise my choice.

Firstly, I posted a full answer only to confirm that Bagpuss had won, however, as I already had a question to hand and the setter's decision is final, I deferred to six7s's judgement.
Secondly, John is wrong: I included McVeigh because he happens to be one of those covered by the previous question, but he is not the odd one out, nor is the reason that they were all wrestlers, as Gene Simmons has also never been a wrestler although there is a wrestler called The Demon whose make up is based on Simmons'.
So, let's start again...
Douglas Adams, Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, Jean Claude Van Damme, Timothy McVeigh, Gene Simmons and Governor Jesse Ventura - which is the odd one out and why?

Douglas Adams because all the other names contain the letter "e".

Writer, actor, actor turned politician,actor/bodybuilder, murderer, singer with a big tongue, wrestler turned politician
acting and politics are quite popular here - is that relevant
NB order of above may not be accurate

Mycroft Posted Jul 24, 2002
Nope, although the profession in question is often associated with politicians.

Bodyguards!!!
They've all been bodyguards at one time, except for Kevin Costner who was only one in the eponymous film
