Scary Dave 94231
Just went outside to take a peek (bit nippy and have to catch a plane tomorrow so wasn't for long!) and after about 5 minutes I saw a bright white light scream across the sky in the South-Eastern quadrant roughly North-south at a declination of about 45 degrees which was about as long as my index finger at the end of my outstretched arm.....stayed another 15 minutes but didn't see another one.

I'm Aurora, U142060, and I'll be watching tonight from Ayrshire, in south-west Scotland if it's not too cloudy. I'll be posting my results soon.

Wait a second... at 10:00 (pm, right?) GMT, it's noon here! Do you want me to go out at three in the morning (my time) so I can get some good veiwing before dawn, or would that mess up the results? I'd be willing to... I was out there early this morning, counting for unofficial purposes. (How many? 20-something per half hour, at best, with a partially set moon to get in the way.)

Does "Clouds, clouds, clouds, ooh, aeroplane!, clouds, clouds" count as a result?

That's a shame. Will they be as good next year (if they occur at all next year)?

The Perseids are always a good shower. This year, they were less impressive because of a really bright waxing gibbous moon.
They're popular because they occur in the summer so it's not blisteringly cold outside. You can read more about meteor showers at http://www.h2g2.com/A346646 That's a page I did for the h2g2 University.
I'm surprised at how well this was received in the community. We'll have to do this again in November for the Leonids maybe.
