Would you say it had to be something physical, or emotional?
Both as in my case it involved making a choice that required heaps of gumption and the possibility of injury and maybe a brush with death. Then the emotional/adrenalin overdose as the decision was made.

* Do things get harder as you/they get older?
Physical things definitely do, that's a given. Emotional 'stuff', gets easier IMO
Are some things merely disguised as being difficult?
Yes. Lot's of things are made out to be hard and they are not. Like pulling a 5" steel gaff out of your cheek.

* Are certain things only difficult for a short time, while others stay hard forever? 
* Do you always take the soft option?
Occasionally. I'm sure everyone does. "Death or Ice-cream? Ice-cream please."
