Yeah,it was definitely better than i thought it would be.The casting seems to really work and i liked the references to the old series and the humour.Especially the wheelie bin.smiley - laugh
I guess i'm a little too old to be scared by the baddies but i thought they were pretty well done.
Am looking forward to the Dalek episode.

Pixel, I have to disagree with you about Ace... I didn't see Dr Who in the 1980s, but then my son got the DVDs of a few stories and I finally got to see Ace. My opinion is - to put it in 1980s terms, she's ace!

No, really, she is good. (My favourite companions remain Susan and Barbara. Truly.)

As for Nicola wossname, Peri - yecch! Sulky young madam...

I quite liked Ace as a character, although I didn't see much of the 7th Doctor in general. Just the repeats the BBC put on after canning the series.

I think maybe we all remember most fondly the stories and charactors from when we 1st loved the show. For me it was Tom Baker and Romana and that Key of Time story.smiley - biggrin
By the time the 7th series came along i had got a bit cynical about the whole thing i suppose i thought i was too grown up for a kids show.
Now i'm old enough to appreciate it all over again.

I was initiated by Sylvester McCoy, and have a lingering fondness for most of his episodes. But my favourite is still Robots Of Death, with Tom Baker.

I thought the first episode of the new show was good. The two leads worked well together, the humor came through well, over all a success I think. Both Piper and Eccleston fitted their roles well.

Also about the earlier point about female timelords, if you remember Romana (I think thats the correct spelling) female timelord in the Tom Baker era. If I remember correctly Romana was placed with The Doctor by the leaders of Gallifrey against his will to ensure that he did not cause to much trouble.

I seem to remember a courtroom type setting where this was his punishment for some crime he had commited (maybe in his past?).

Prehaps some one can remember more?

Zantic - Who is this woman??

Ace was the best (nothing to do with the fact that I was at the right age for her to be a role model or anything - honest!)

Anyone else see a bit of Jane Asher in Billie? I think it's mostly around the mouth, but maybe I'm just mad (probably).

I think she'll be a good assistant. I refuse to be biased just cos of the cr*p music and the ginger whinger connection.

Ecclestone is gonna be a great doctor - all this previous worry about him being too serous was dashed by this episode. I'm wondering whether the episode long grin was helped by the fact that he know he is THE Doctor and will be fore a whoile new generation of baby fans! smiley - winkeye

I thought the punishnent was when the time lords made the Dr stay on earth and that was Jon Pertwee wasn't it?
I think if i drag it up from the depths of my memory that Dr and Romana had to find some mystical object that could save or destroy the universe.

Zantic - Who is this woman??

smiley - geek moment.

The doctor was punished by banishment to Earth in the 20th century for being a bad boy. The speifics escape me as I've had too much to drink (and I'm not that sad - honest) And a re-generation was forced on him to the Pertwee era.

Tom Baker era the banishment was lifted as he saved the gallifrey government or something similar - but his current assistant left (Romana) but he picked up a nieve female timelord (top of her class but never been out) who was also Romana (confusing - and at the start a jobsworth. He cured her of that I think) them morphed to the little blonde (Lalla Ward - Bakers now ex-wife)

Baker and Romana (Lalla) had to find the pieces of the crystal of summat or other, but I don't think that had anything to do with the banishment being lifted)

smiley - cheers funny the more i drink the more i seem to remember ~
The last piece of the key was a girl who turned into the missing bit when she touched it.
Then when the Dr had put the world to rights he turned her back into a girl and scattered all the bits again.
God i need to get off this topic for awhile before my brain fries i think i've been smiley - online2long

That story (as a repeat) was where it stopped being shown in New Zealand, in about 2002. smiley - grr! (My son got the novelisations, but I would love to see it...smiley - wah)

I was prepared for the show to be rubbish, and it was, but in a good way. The special effects were cheesy, the humour was terrible and the acting was as wooden as the old sets. A triumphant return to form following that ridiculous one-off with Paul McGann which tried to make Doctor Who an international brand. Ten out of ten smiley - biggrin

The Iron Maiden

As far as the new Doctor looking a bit young goes, didn't Peter Davison and Colin Baker look a bit on the young side too? Chris dresses better, I must say smiley - biggrin

Billie Piper as an assistant was the only thing I wasn't looking forward to beforehand, but I'm happy to say she proved me wrong and did a good job. I look forward to the rest of the series and have high hopes for it smiley - smiley

You're right there, her acting is better than her singing. I think that I, like Zantic was thinking that the whole bad music and married to Chris Evans thing might put me off her, but I wasn't disappointed. Bring on Saturday for episode 2!!

Not frightened of the plastic thingies? I was. Think of those mannequins in all the quiet towns in boutiques called marjorie with yellow cellophane over the windows to stop the light from making the clothes fade from what we laughing call the sunshine... think of the revenge they would want to have on all of the marjories of this world... if that doesn't scare you, what will? smiley - run
