No offence taken...I didn't mention that my fame (or infamy) in this regard has spread to Switzerland as well, where I am known to prefer both the avant-ski and apres-ski to the actual SKI
Very glad to hear your house hasn't turned into a boat. And will have his mice marinated

apres-ski of course.. no misunderstanding there
and .. the choice being between ski and apres-ski .. I'd say .. fame .. definitely fame

Well if it's the choice between cold snow down the back of the neck and a cup of hot chocolate by the roaring fire...

Hapi - Hippo #5 Posted May 24, 2006
.. again a vary clear image.. snow is meant to be on Xmas cards, not to be experienced in any other way unless you happen to be pinguin.
and I'm not too fond of hot chocolate .. but I'll settle for a whisky

Oh but penguins are very cute creatures (had a striking mental picture then of penguins on skis ... )
Whiskey..ah yes, a hot toddy

penguins on skis .. flat feet in boots .. evolution isn't finished with penguins yet! for some reason I had visions of Ice Age while thinking of the penguins.. the roller coaster ride through the ice caves .. .. and following that (don't ask, I think I'm going slightly mad) visions of Shreck .. so much to do, so much to see..
Ice Age first

Both great movies...I think of them in the same bracket too And I read just the other day of a newly-identifed variety of penguin with bushy eyebrows! (I'm not pulling you leg, I promise..just can't find the reference )

penguin with bushy eyebrows..
I did indeed see pictures of penguin-look-a-likes with .. what .. feathers? hair? above eyes.. mm..
but then there's evolution's next step: the penguin with ski-type feet? I mean .. they sort of look like they're walking on skis anyway, it probably wouldn't take too much effort.. bit longer toes and all that .. ?? and I don't expect them to show up in red and blus striped ski jackets.. just the skis??
HaPi - Pitch 20 - not far from the shop
Elfrida Posted May 27, 2006
Yes, indeed...I guess they must be feathers but they certainly do look like eyebrows! Perhaps there's a future in beauty parlours for penguins ('Just a little more off that left eyebrow, I think...')
Definitely evolving towards snow-shoes or skis, I reckon..and maybe no ski-jackets (after all they already have natty black and white outfits that Armani couldn't design any better)
But I bet they'd be great at the apres-ski parties
Off to West Wales soon..will take small rowing boat I think Have a good weekend!

beauty parlors for penguins well, the possibilities are mindboggling .. and I agree on the outfits.. (design penguins .. no )
West Wales! well.. take care I was in Wales a loooong time ago, wondering about the colours.. the grass was so green, the trees were so .. I'd never seen so many shades of green before in one landscape
and the next morning I understood why the grass was indeed perfect
my tent was (phew) on one of the higher parts of the camping site so it wasn't flooded. The rain was .. unbelievable .. I'd never seen so many shades of grey in one rainshower.

Back from West Wales Fortunately the sun was shining most of the time...sounds like quite a time you had in Wales - glad you avoided being flooded out while there. How was your week?
HaPi - Pitch 20 - not far from the shop
Hapi - Hippo #5 Posted Jun 1, 2006
well.. to be precise the tent wasn't flooded .. as for the rest .. oh.. and my daughter's tent was blown to pieces one night so she dropped by with all luggage, sleeping bag, ...
and .. in two days a bricklayer will come to redo the driveway .. and I needed to get the bricks out now .. I started tonight tomorrow I'll do the rest. Tomorrow night I'll probably be almost dead
good to hear that your Wales trip was fine, fine weather anyway West Wales.. forests and hills.. mm nice!

Elfrida Posted Jun 6, 2006
Hope the brick-moving wasn't as taxing as you feared! Have had another trip to West Wales for a People's Kitchen event...great fun but punctuated by my (increasingly vain) attempts to get the iMac's cable connection to work *tears blonde hair out by brown roots*
Ah well...nice to be back
PS The penguins with 'eyebrows' are called 'Amsterdam (!) and Rock Island rockhoppers' (Eudyptes moseleyi) and have been declared a species in their own right thanks to the efforts of one Pierre Jouventin, film-maker and penguin aficionado. Still looking for a photo though

Must be more tired than I thought...that should have been 'Amsterdam and ST PAUL rockhoppers' (the Rock Island Line is something quite different I think )

impressive .. it may be a temporary link .. newspaper and all that .. the regular rockhopper has more websites and has impressive eye decoration as well.. wow .. I mean
the brick laying event left my hands aching for a few days .. not the laying, there were professionals for that, but taking the old bricks out, stacking them (more or less) ... obviously not used to physical labour lasting longer than an hour this was for a full day. The good news was that my back didn't hurt (expected that), legs and arms were fine, just hands and lower arms.
as for getting mac and cable working.. may I suggest for a next attempt a wireless network on a mac? that caused me to have some some time ago.

Great link have to love those penguins... Hope you've recovered from brick-induced wear and tear I was aiming to try the wireless connecting next (!) but got waylaid by a nasty computer virus (I thought Macs didn't usually get 'em? *sniffle*) Seems to be okay now but am being vigilant and trying to get a firewall that doesn't exclude the chums I want as well as the little tinkers that I don't... Apart from that all's well here in my corner of Wales, where the tiny oasis of birdsong in the city is occasionally enlivened by the usual screams (neighbours rowing), cheers (rugby stadium nearby or footy on the telly) and wails (ditto). Hope all's well with you

& all is well. Some streets around here in NL have changed dramatically; orange flags, orange paint, orange t-shirts, orange ... and of course screams, cheers and wails when there's a football match on the telly. and that's roughly 16 hours per day atm.
There's of course good news as well, tv comments with the matches include comments by an old (almost 60, older than I am, so old) football player using his own Dutch. he mixes up sayings, expressions, and has the same logic as a senile goldfish ("if you want to win you have to play the ball") he's sort of a cult, serious people quote him. He's the type who'll explain you that 2+2 is indeed most often 5 and when he's done explaining (10 minutes later) you're convinced he's right.. with .. what was it again?
Apples catching virusses.. yes, I heard about that .. and hanging an apple in a wireless network .. and , but the most important is . and I think that a firewall won't protect you from virusses!
HaPi - Pitch 20 - not far from the shop
Elfrida Posted Jun 17, 2006
Well more cheers than wails I guess as NL is playing very well...I like the sound of your commentator...ours say some extraordinary things too (my favourite this time round is from NL v. Cote d'Ivoire: 'of course there's a big difference between 2-nil and 2-1' - knew exactly what he meant but it sounded so silly... ) So who's going to win, d'you reckon? Argentina look pretty unstoppable at the moment...
Well it's possible that the virus arrived via a strange message on ICQ so have changed security settings there. Have a friend who lives round the corner who will help with the wireless set-up...
Just about to do a bit of gardening...lovely sunshine

our linguist footballer is Johan Cruyff (referred to as .. yes .. JC ) his stories are not translatable, not even into Dutch, but yesterday after a press conference by the dutch team he told dead serious that he liked the way the trainer pressed the meet. And of course the well known "when you want to win than you have to have the ball" (I'm proud of that that translation)
who'll win.. .. isn't football the game where 22 man run after a ball and 90 minutes later the Germans win? everyone seems to agree they don't stand a chance now ...
Apple and wireless.. I once succeeded .. probably because I didn't give up for a whole afternoon.. my nerves were stronger than the apple's.
Key: Complain about this post
