Now, just need to fill the gap between Halo and Doom 3.

Replying to TWS re Post#19 - there isn't dual-wielding in the original Halo. It's true you can carry two weapons at once, but you can only select one of them for use.
That gap - hmm. Not sure it needs filling. Why do you think it does?

I dunno... I just felt that four years seemed a long time for the puposes of this article.I suppose there is no real need to fill the space as I've listed all the big hitters.
D'you reckon I should do a bit on the future of FPS's before taking the major step of submitting this to PR...

If it was me, I'd have submitted it to PR already.
But what have you got to say about futures? (Sounds interesting)

Just a bit about how FPS's are inevitably going to get more realistic (which will cause ever more tabloid frothing) and quick mentions of stuff like STALKER and Half-Life 3.

Pinniped Posted Mar 18, 2005
I'd hold back on that for now.
The increasing realism is just an obvious trend, don't you think? Mentioning it won't add much, except to lead in to that other thing
As soon as this goes into PR, the violence-catalyst idea is going to come up, more's the pity.
But as a responsible devotee of the genre, why should you feed such prejudices?

I just felt it may need mentioning...
Ahh, sod it. I'll stick it in PR and if other people want it mentioned they'll tell me soon enough.

that was a very good, detailed history of FPS, but you left out one important detail. squad-based games. they werent really too big for a while, but they are moving up there now with games like Rainbow Six 3 and soon-to-be 4 series. before Halo 2 the R63 series had the top number of users online in console history. just figured you might want to mention that if its not too late.

I'll give it a go, I'm thinking of a bit of a re-write where I prune back the game-specific stuff and intersperse it with paragraphs about deathmatching, squad games, etc.

I'm having real problems getting the paragraph on deathmatch and multiplayer out of my head and on the screen... mostly because I haven't had much experience of deathmatch since Doom. Help!

How about:
Unreal/Unreal Tournament series
Dark Force/Jedi Knight series (known for innovative level design and of course lightsabers)
Tribes series (pretty much exclusively multiplayer, introduced jetpacks, vehicles and functioning bases)

I am in the 'hyped' group with regards to Halo 2. I thought the game was good...at best. It has great graphics, and it has great online multiplayer. I got bored with the story in single-player and from what I've heard from people who've completed the game, I'm glad I didnt spend the time to go that far as I would be disapointed.
I would contend that the game is almost groundbreaking. If they had the feature that is in the new (non-FPS) Splinter Cell game (online co-op play), then I would say that it was.
