A Conversation for Talking Point: What's in a name?
If I have kids...

....don't want to call them something too normal coz they'll have thre friends with the same name at school. I had thatand I don't want that for them.
Though equally I don't want to give them wacky names like being named after fruit. Think I'd rather give them names that are real names, but slightly more unusual, like Tiegan or Zachary.

I know a girl called Teegan. It's weird because her sister's called 'Kate'... Quite a contrast.
Personally, I love the name Jesse for a boy, but I fear it would be a little harsh, even my adult friends have been shocked and giggly, children would be worse. I adore it though!
I like odd names, but generally go for things that sound nice. And dont over-complicate the spelling unless it's actually how it's spelled (i.e. 'neeve' and 'luwee' just look horrid!)
I quite like Welsh men's names (Geraint, Hywel etc...)
For girls I'm not so sure. I'd probably opt for long names with a few shortening options which can be adjusted to fit. I like Buffy though

Oh yeah, weird spellings are totally out there with weird names.
Jesse's not bad.

no, but if someone's *already* called Jesse, what happens when they start getting called *a* jessy? Particularly a lad. I feel it would be cruel. I might do it anyway. If I have kids, they are gonna hate me anyway.
Too many jessies!

We went for names that were not too common nor too unusual, short (so not readily abbreviated) and fitted OK with the surname without making unfortunate initials.
I guess in the long run it doesn't matter too much what you name your children as they can always choose something different later.

Yeah, you do have to think of surname and initials. Bad idea to call your kid something that makes their initials spell something, especially a rude word.

My mum was looking at Christopher for me if I were a boy, but it would have sounded like a stutter with my surname which also starts Chris... So she decided on Lawrence (to be called Laurie).. Then I was a girl and my dad got his West Side Story dream...

I'm sure you're glad not be be Chris then.
For me, if your surname has some similarity to a first name, avoid the first name. Dunno why people call their kids "John Johnson" or "Connor O'Connor".
