A Conversation for Talking Point: What's in a name?
Hate my name

My last name I hated as it was used to bully me at school (including teachers). The day I got married and changed my name I was really upset, and when I took it back three years later when I got divorced I was so happy I get along with it much better now.
My 'real' name I hate - it's very boring, wasn't too common at school, but usually at least one other girl to share it with in my year, plus it ages me - most people with my name are older than me by around 5-10 years.
I'm so glad the internet came along and allowed me to change it without upsetting my parents! My old CB handle never had the same effect as my internet name.

Agree totally. The name I use when asked my real forename is not the name on my birth certificate.

How sad that you don't like your names. My name is what it is and I am particular about how it is spelled. My handle on h2g2 is the name of a venerable old cat, sadly departed after owning us for 17 years.

I, too, love cats. And you're right, they do own you. I still hate my name though.

I don't think it's sad, I think it's strange not more people are the same! None of us chose our names, they are inflicted on us!
