Interesting and well written, but it will require some work to make it suitable for the Edited Guide.

First, you're not supposed to mention yourself. Remove all references to "I" and "me". That will make it more suitable for other people to add to later.

Secondly, you don't really explain what a pun is. After stating the rather misleading definition, you should give a worked example, explaining the double meaning. Then you can go into your list of styles.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the standard response to a pun is a groan, not a laugh. Nobody ever laughs at a pun.

Yes. A nicely written entry (impressive GuideML for a first entry - have you lurked under other nicknames?). Amusing too.

As Gnomon says first person references need to be rephrased or removed for EG entries. Another improvement I'd suggest is linking to other relevant EG entries, such as A592643 Puns and Other Word Play.

The fact this other entry already exists means that you *will* need to refocus your entry to fill a more exact topic, as it is not done to have too EG entries on the same subject. However it is possible to have entries on different *aspects* of the same topic.

Instead of copying and pasting the dictionary definition of a pun, it would be rather better to explain it in your own words.

A variation on Where's the candle was played out in the popstscript to 'The Vicar of Dibley' (UK TV).

Two nuns in the bathroom:

Nun 1 Where's the soap?
Nun 2 Yes, it does!

A scientific one - this actually happened. A colleague of mine had been waiting some weeks for the arrival of some Phosphorus-32 labelled RNA to conduct a genetic manipulation experiment. On the day it arrived there was some problem concerning Health and Safety and he was banned from doing the experiment by the Safety Officer.

Colleague 1: "Oh, the irony of it".
Colleague 2" Yeah, radioactive RNA"

As an engineer, I keep having to remind my colleagues that as engineers we should not use irony...it gets into the equipment and caused failures.

Surely this infringes copywrite unless you have applied to the publisher?

Well, of course you're allowed to quote other sources provided you supply the reference - that's the whole point of 'Bibliographies' or 'References'

In hootoo, there might well be occasions when one might need to do so. However, as Mikey says above, in this particular case it's best to use ones own words.

Agreed - I will remove the dictionary definition and replace with my own explanation of a pun in conjunction with Ender Wiggin's (A103438) excellent technical analysis.

Now there's irony for you - using an example of a pun written by John Cleese, the man who said the three rules of comedy are 'No Puns, no puns, no puns'.

MT - when referring to a researcher don't forget to use their U number with a U, not an A (which is an entry number) Ender Wiggin is U103438 (popular nickname ) and the entry referred to is A592643 Puns and Other Word Play (I got a bit confused )
