That is actually pretty much in-line with what I expect. No airline tries to guarantee reasonably consistent air pressure or quality, and it is a risk of every passenger. It becomes much more dicey if someone has any lung or heart condition. Gut feel tells me that it's not a great idea to experiment with.
Which, barring a major lottery win, pretty much precludes us ever seeing the other side of the Atlantic Sea again. Drat!

You might ask your physician about portable oxygen.
I've often seen people traveling with a personal oxygen bottle.
Its been policy with at least the American airlines to hire nurses and orderlies for airline stewardesses and stewards since the 1940s, so there would always be someone on hand with adequate training to deal with an in flight medical emergency, courtesy industry planners and critics like Eddie Rickenbacker and James Stewart.
Paramedics hadn't been invented yet, so a minimum RN qualification became the standard.
Mom used to get recruiting flyers in the mail from the airlines all the time during her active nursing career, but didn't like to travel so much.
When in doubt, ask the airlines.
Shop.

I doubt they still hire nurses predominantly these days. With the way airlines watch their bottom lines now, squeezing every bit of profit out of passengers with ever increasing fees and minimizing their costs wherever possible, I just don't think it would be feasible to hire nurses. I would expect they just offer entry level staff some first aid and CPR training. I know first year pilots make a pittance, less than first year RNs.
...
Yep. The use of nurses as flight attendants ended well before they stopped being called stewardesses, around WWII.
Nowadays they mostly rely on a combination of basic first aid and CPR training for flight staff, a team of doctors on the ground to give instruction, and the likelyhood of medical professional passengers.
Here's an anecdotal story that describes the current norm.

Re journals: I second the advice to publish before you think you're entirely ready - it will still likely be better than all the papers churned out by people who never second-guess themselves.

I used to drive by Trenton all the time when I went to uni at Queen's in Kingston!

*nods to Marabarista's comment* This is something that I realized when I started peer reviewing papers myself. I realized that my unsubmitted papers were often much more promising than many of the submitted ones I was reviewing. And if I submit something that truly isn't ready now, the peer reviewers will send it back with notes (hopefully) on how to improve it to make it ready.

I used to ogle the pretty Queen's ladies returning after summer break - when I was a lad and attending the military school of electronics and communications at Kingston.
Eeeek, that WAS 38 or 39 years ago.

Now-a-days, I only see Kingston when this little computer in my breast needs attention. Their hospital is the cardiac and cancer care for this part of Ontario. It seems a nuisance to me to drive that hour or so each way, the finding of parking and everything else for a 20 to 30 minute appointment, but I suppose it beats 3 hours to Ottawa or Toronto ...

Any spare blue garments around?
Seems that even I and my clumsy fingers can log in again nowadays

Hej Milla
And Mala is here and the is apparently well parked
And not to forget me manners, to the several newcomers
As to public speaking, I can see that I - quite happily - missed the boats and they all seem to get very well harbour. Should the need arise again, and should anyone so wish, I'd be happy to weigh in not so much on the speaking part but on the visuals. Something I've made something of a professional hobby of
Hmm - good, actually, to be back. Any mbougatses around?

Nah, you need to feel at home and comfortable with them. But I'd certainly comment and help if you'd want it.

My presentation was pretty well received I think. I don't know I'll ever be comfortable with that sort of thing, however. I have been asked to present at another local conference next fall, but have no idea what to talk about that I feel is of worth.
