On this side of the pond, we seem to be having nice mid-March weather ... smiley - winkeye

It's raining today. Just as well, that way I won't be tempted to go out and waste energy on my bicycle, considering I've been sleeping even worse than usual lately ... smiley - erm

BBQed for the first time this year, and on my new grill. In that rain of course, but as the forecast said it might be snow I'll take it.

I'm a little sad no one from the h2g2 editors has responded to my emails about doing another phase of my research. Things must have slowed down at hootoo much more than I thought to have a 3 month delay is responding. Sad really, feels like the end of an era.

Unless you run afoul of the TOS or a notable Injunction, you won't hear much from TPtB these days. smiley - sadface

Had to scrape the car this morning and we had snow flurries later in the day.

I'm running a polling station next week and was really hoping for a nice hot polling day. We're overdue for one. Don't fancy my chances much.

Beeblefish, which email address did you use? I'm afraid the core team can't find any message from you.

Idling in DXB (Dubai airport). 01:35 (am) departures are not high on my list of favourites. Especially not when the airline's online check-in doesn't run so that seating can only be chosen late and at the airport. Meaning an aisle seat (good). With somewhat limited leg room due to an entertainment box under the seat in front (sucks). And any vacant aisle seat are D seats - that also have enterrtainment boxes. Hrmpf.

First world problems, sure. But for 7 hours, it's something I insist on grumbling about smiley - winkeye

Dubai is only 11,000 km from here - - - I should look at visiting some day. smiley - winkeye

Actually, despite its apparent popularity, I completely fail to see Dubai's charms as a vacation destination. I sure wouldn't.

Now, having your 1:35am departure delayed is just not fun smiley - zzzsmiley - grr

From what I've read, it's a great place for a vacation home if you like blistering heat, toxic beach water, and indentured servants.

The conditions for construction workers there are not the best (to throw in a euphemism!). And maybe even more worrying is that people in droves travel half a world or so to get there to take these jobs - says something about conditions where they come from smiley - ermsmiley - erm

I've picked up my key and ballot boxes, all ready for a day on the frontline of democracy on Thursday.

Obviously I have a postal vote, which I cast some 10 days ago. Leaflets from candidates arrived through our letterbox yesterday smiley - rolleyes Not sure they've got to grips with modern voting procedures.

I wanted to share a link I found on another board.
Yes, I know it is a Wiki link, but this one is fairly well done. It was posted by local Park Ranger, and she is also a very good friend. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Bear . Are there any other environmental icons out there?

Nipping back to election candidates and leaflets just before elections, thus is the norm it seems. We never see or hear from our councillors until the polling cards are sent out.

None of the police commissioner candidates bothered leafletting at all here.

Well, I finally did my bit of Nod's student finance application this evening. They wanted my 2014-15 info (ie not the 2015-16 info I'd already assembled and had indeed been waiting for). And then *after* I'd submitted my info I found a discrepancy between my payslip info and my tax info. I have no way of recalling the info I've submitted to sort this out. But there's every chance the discrepancy will (a) delay Nod's application and (b) cause unnecessary interest from the taxman (I have paid the correct tax but the payslip info will suggest I haven't).

Oh and Sic is in trouble at college again, so I had to go into college today (a 2 hour round trip) instead of taking it easy after working the election yesterday.

Apart from all that, an excellent start to the weekend.

We generally have 3 layers of elections, all completely separate. City and municipal 'councillors', ministers and Premiers of each province, and then ministers and Prime Minister of the nation as a whole.

I can't imagine adding the extra layer of Police Commish, local court judges, Treasurer, who knows what else ... People are already disenchanted with voting, so to have so many more titles to fill - I don't know how well that might work.

Hey Milla,

I emailed [email protected] a few times, but no reply. Which is the best email to actually use?

thanks for your reply!

Job hunting is the absolute worst. I'm over the moon that I just got a tenure-track position at my school. The fact that I get to *stop* job hunting for the forceable future is one of the best parts.
