Stuck in an awful quandary.

Should I buy a new chainsaw, a new laptop or an iPad2?

As far as your purchases go, Eats, were I in your shoes I'd buy a new laptop, since that's what's missing from my own house at the moment. S's is nearly dead, and mine is getting there. If S had a new laptop, she'd stop borrowing mine (I assume).

What's your situation? What are the new laptop, iPad 2, and chainsaw to be used for, and why are your existing laptop and chainsaw not good enough? Have you an iPad 1, or some other tablet? We need to know more!

Don't bother with the iPad unless you can fully justify what you'd use it for.

The quandary is this:

Going down to Nodnol to work in Jan for several years. My 8 year old laptop just doesn't quite cope with using a decent webcam, which will give my binlids the chance to see and chat to me while I'm down there during the week. I will be flying home pretty much every weekend.

I'm doing more tree work at the moment. The 2 saws I have are 50cc, one is good for all day use in softwood, pines etc, the second is a nice steady saw for ringing up firewood blocks. I could do with a bigger saw, 75 to 85cc to power through the harder stuff and also will cope better if I need a longer bar fitted for thicker trees. There is still a chance I could be made redundant early next year in the 2nd tranche, in which case I'll need one then.

I also want an iPad2 ! My iPhone is great but I would want the bigger screen for reading books, sofa-surfing etc.

Glad your heating is fixed mini. Nothing beats a long soak in a hot bath....with a book.

If you're looking for something that'll allow you to video call, and read on the move, then a tablet of some description is a good idea.

Whether it's an iPad or something that will also replace some of the functionality that your aging laptop can't cope with is another matter.

If you ride a horse really hard (as in fast) how do you describe the result in English? The expression I'm looking for would be, if I translate directly from Swedish, 'foaming with sweat'.

Laptop or iPad2 like Pastey says if you can do everything you'd use the laptop for on the iPad, get the iPad. If not get a good laptop. You can get a new chainsaw if/when you leave the force. It'd be of use to you then and limited use till then. The computer equipment would get much more use in the interim.
