They just reopened the Cafe. I need to find someone to implant DNA for gills though, to get there.
Lil, I'll have to find you a Guitar magazine. It's more professional. Spin is another one. Its newsy and gossipy, but fairly well done.

Spin I know, and so does Mike. I guess you could say I was looking for the rough trade. These are zines that Mike can't get in Plymouth, as he says. And we had a long discussion about them on IM today, so I won't retread that ground now. I'm learning a lot about a segment of the industry I thought had withered away during the Reagan years.

Cheers Lil. With the benefit of hindsight it amases me that ideologues like Reagen and Thatcher were so popular. Was the world really so bad that we needed a global spanking?

Or, in Thatcher's case, a handbagging...
What do you think of either candidate's chances (counting the ones with any chance of actually winning) on 7 November? Are the Kiwis paying any attention to our horse race?

Lil, in NZ the words ho-hum probably sum up the general citizen's view about the American presidential ebay-style election.
Newspaper cartoonist Doonesbury probably sums up our feelings about American politics in general pretty accurately

...and after reading you posting again - gee that Southern Comfort (IRL) is strong - for nostalgic reasons I want the guy with the comb-over to win

..and while waiting for your response whilst drinking a bottle of Southern Comfort, the grand old drink of the South, with a couple of friends, I watched my name rise from Number 14 on the "Who's Online" thingie to Number 2. There is a possiblity I hit Number 1 but, alas, nature called.

Do you mean Steve Vai, o sultandude? Not sure if even I've got his name exactly right...there are a lot of guitar masters in the world and I don't have time or money to find them all
Is he a bluesy-rock type guy or general AOR?

Phil Posted Oct 29, 2000
You're right (I think) that the guitar twiddler is Steve Vai. What can I remember about him...Worked with Dave Lee Roth, released a few albums of his own. I think he did the guitar twiddles in one of the Bill and Ted movies.

"Yo dudes! He learned his music as a member of 'The Mother's of Invention" studying under the MASTER, Frank Zappa RIP, he then went on to add an extra string and invent a whole new set of chords, awesome dude. Still not sure about the spelling, will ask my son nest time I e-mail him. I think one of his solo albums was called 'Surfing with Aliens'."

"Cool, my son is an ardent Zepplin fan but Stevie and another guy Joe Pesconi no, thats not it, but something like that were his guitar idols BTY he was 23 at the time and he introduced me to them. I had to agree with him they were awesome guitarists. Will find out and let you know."

Mike, Satriani (Satch) is one of my favorites, I have all his cds. Vie and Satriani play anything. Steve Vai studied under Joe Satriani. Joe did the Surfing with the Aliens cd, which was a hit, but not his first. The two of them toured with wonderboy Eric Johnson a couple of years ago and called it the G3 tour. Satriani has a web site with MP3s (they all probably do).
Satch's style has changed in the last few years, as he integrates some techno and other new wave sounds, but I think his first few cds were magical.
I can send you the Surfing title MP3 if you like?

"Yo, Sitting between 2 trees. Absolutely spot on, Joe Satriani. Thanks for putting my memory back together. And yes it was he who did Surfing with Aliens. Both awesome guitarists. Stevie and Joe were in a televised concert in the UK some years back with some other greats including Brian May, did you catch it? And why are'nt you at the Halloween party?"
