Thanks - he is being transferred out of the hellhole A&E holding pen to the lovely renal unit so that is a relief. He has some adequate pain relief now so is more comfortable.

Magwitch, regarding the words for people who abandon pets, the other volunteers and I probably said most of them at one time or another. We try to make sure visitors are out of earshot, however.

I recently told my 24 year old daughter that I'll probably end up being one of those little old ladies living alone with a dozen cats. She wanted to know what made me think she'd ever have the financial resources to be able to move out. That made me think we are going to end up like Big Edy and Little Edy.

In other news, my sister has been laid off as a benefits manager for a major international company because they have outsourced their HR department. < sigh >

More outsourcing. When all these free trade agreements were passed I had thought of it in terms of the little nations getting a larger slice of the pie. At least, that's how it was sold to the media. Scott Walker, didn't see that coming at all. Or massive outsourcing. Like the RAF outsourcing reconnaissance.


A prominent member of the house of representatives in the US Congress has introduced a bill called The Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act. I am not making this up! It seems the Republicans are angered by how the Democrats changed out all the old incandescent bulbs in the Capitol Building and offices for new CFC bulbs. They want the right to waste energy, one has to presume because it benefits one of their biggest patrons, the coal industry.

I haven't seen ideology trumping science like this since the days of Lysenko.

He has peritonitis probably related to his home dialysis, but there is something else going on too. I'm worried again. I think the A&E hellhole would have shipped him to the renal unit whatever is wrong with him - gets him off their books on a weekend day.

I really want mum and dad to see the cake - it is a replica of the one they had 40 years ago - took quite a lot of effort to get photos and find someone to make it! The idea was to get a photo the same as their cake-cutting one from their wedding day, be such a shame if they don't even get to see it, even if it has gone a bit dry to eat. Am just not sure when dad will get out of the hospital.

In all fairness, Lil, my sister's job was outsourced from Connecticut to Ohio. They just decided to go with an outside firm, probably so that they don't have any benefit costs. How ironic.

FYI: major hardware store chains accept CFC/CFL bulbs (and also rechargeable batteries) for recycle. Some other retailers accept them at periodic recycle "events." Suggestions for storage of spent bulbs are a plastic bucket w/lid or a cardboard box w/ a plastic bag liner.

Me and my sisters have been trying to work out something to get all the family together later this year for my mums 70th birthday. Yesterday one of them did ask has dad been asked about it...

Went out to a gig (Electric Wizard, supported by Devil... heavy metal, basically) for the first time in ages last night... been waiting to see EW for quite a long time and it was an awesome gig (even if most of the crowd did utterly fail at the bit where the vocalist chants something with the intention of everyone joining in), but gods am I paying for it this morning... very, very tired.
