Early in the day for me, and yet thunder already rumbles in the south and west, threatening disruption, and it's a Monday, worst traffic day of the week. So Let's have a new thread and shorten our wait time.

You're at the Salon at Lil's Atelier, and you're warmly welcome to join us. We've been very active recently, what with forest fires and all, and would like nothing better than to sink into the soft upholstery and converse with one another.

Thunderstorms, not good for things connected. Are your phone lines buried or overhead?
The weekend was good for me. I managed to get a new toy at the computer fair on saturday - A TV card. Still need to get something to connect it to the aerial outside and someting for a FM radio aerial then I can check to see if it works.
I also got a modem for a friend - a mac user who has been having loads of problems with one of those geoport (not) modems, that worked as well.
I was going to check up what had happened when I got in last night, but I just went to bed and looking at the backlog I think it was a good idea.

I just went out and looked, and it's a magnificent storm with a big round berm in front. Bad news, but beautiful.

QMike flew to Perth yesterday -- I don't expect any more email until he finds another cybercafe. He'll not be pleased to hear about the hack.

You had a shopping weekend! For toys! That's the best kind. I bought a UPS for number 2 desktop and noticed that the price of CD-Rs is plummeting (I got 50 for less than 30 bucks) ... this laptop is attached to the UPS via power strip, but my phoe line, although in the ground, is unprotected. So I hope I find you here in a few hours, because I really better go away for a while now.

I'll be back later. I've got toys to play with . I've just been and got a TV aerial lead so I can play more with that tonight. I'm also about to buy some wetboots and fins for this diving lark I'm getting into.
CD-Rs are getting cheaper here as well. I bought a box of 10 (with cases) for 5GBP, Traxdata so not no name cheapies either. Must get myself a burner, but the price is still too high for me (about 150GBP for a good scsi burner). Still I'd just prefer better connectivity from home.

Looks like Lintilla and l are going to be off wreaking havoc and mayhem again...in a contained environment, this time, though. And for money!

CD-RWs are getting cheaper too! I have a pack of 50 that I bought for 35 dollars at staples. Woo hoo!

Man, the weather is heavy. This new UPS doesn't do anything, I must have something not turned on right. After two reboots in succession, I had to turn off desktop #2, isolate the laptop totally, and not do anything important on The Brute. No Billy work, so I played with Poser some more and have the cafe statue well on the way.

Still thunder in the distance, so I better update threads while I can...

What's a UPS?
l thought it was a package delivery service...?

UPS is an Uninteruptable Power Supply. The idea is that if regular power goes down the UPS can keep the computers going for long enough to shut down properly or get an alternate power up. They get this power from big batteries. They can also be used to condition the power if the supply isn't very good (not good voltage regulation).

l take it the one Lil got is proving to be not so uninterruptable? Pity.

Sigh. So many splendid gadgets, so little time.

This UPS turned out to be quite interruptable. I had to connect the lead myself after I got it out of the box, and it snapped quite satisfactorily. Grrr.

I'm also watching tv for the first time in a while. One of the BBC wildlife programmes about Right Whales.

l myself in RL am off to go make Floating lsland. Custard and merangue and it's something l can actually eat. Mm.
l shall try not to drop the eggs this time...l'm going in sans narcotics, to try and boost the old depth perception.

Now to find something worth watching on TV (I can get BBC2 and C4 in watchable quality so I should be able to find something )

Wow, quite some backlog to stumble through to get here, only to discover that most of the conversations took place while I was sound asleep (around 4-5 am Monday morning)...sigh!

These time differences really bug me. Don't understand how Odra manages to keep up, though - she must be awake 24 hours a day...
