No allergy tests yet, Hyp. Probably waiting for the blood tests and see if calms down in a few days.
On the plus side my Stompa is nearly finished and my Techmarines just need a final wash.

We now have housemate living with us, she can't find a job which is getting annoying for her. She went around 30+ shops and cafes today and no one seems to be hiring. She seems a bit despondant. She's applying for an HCA job on one of our wards and me and the other housemate are being nice to sister..

Oh Gw7en, what a disappointment. But persist!
I got the x-rays done, but it was hard work standing without moving for the lumbar set, and I had a small collapse when trying to get into my neighbor's extremely tall SUV -- I just couldn't climb in! The chiro who did the x-rays (and who has his post doc in neurology) came out to witness the event.
But eventually we got me in, and drove on to Tularosa and a great lunch at a Mexican restaurant which was oddly filled with pictures of the Guadalupe Virgin. I've had no problems with my legs the rest of the day.
Sisu? Yes, that must be what I'm missing!

> And I'm still trying to sum up the Sisu needed to actually complete my barely started h2g2 University project on Kalevala
Interesting! Last time I heard of Sisu, I was reading Citizen of the Galaxy, by Robert Heinlein. Our protagonist ends up on a Free Trader ship, and the ship's language is Sisu. Worth a read, if you've never read it.
Sisu sounds like a liquor made with fermented cabbage and beets...
> Which doesn't really stop me from feeling like I got kicked in the gut.
I get rid of that feeling by kicking somebody else in the gut. No, not really. I'd be if I had to go look for another job. Preexisting health condition, obsolete job skills... pfaw. Don't give up, Gwen - part of the problem is that you're looking for work in Austin.
> Is it possible to separate the stamina from the obstinacy and make it a 3:1 solution?
Remember, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
Lil, glad to hear you made it through the x-rays... perhaps it's time to invest in a back brace?

*Realizes there's no need to hit the "abort" button, as the IIEM was perfectly capable of handling even this order without great danger. This is probably why the abort button is sealed behind a panel in the first place.*
You know what this conversation needs? A very large, bottomless carton of ice cream that comes out as whatever flavor the taster desires, and which is constantly at the perfect temperature. It could replenish itself for the remainder of the thread, and be available to anyone who has been the victim of bad news. Matina, do you think you can find something like that?

Is it Denmark? Ah, you're right, it is. My mistake. Odd, really, since I know my last name is a screwy mix of German and Danish...

Although it wouldn't surprise me if the Swedes were involved in Schleswig-Holstein at some time or another, as they were prone on sticking their nose where it didn't belong a couple of hundred years back.
Aha - I knew it!
'The Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp shared the rule of Schleswig and Holstein with the Kings of Denmark. As such, they were often allies (practically clients) of the Swedes, enemies of the Danes. This longtime alliance was sealed by several dynastic marriages. Christina of Holstein-Gottorp married Charles IX of Sweden, Hedwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp married Charles X Gustavus, Duke Frederick IV married the eldest daughter of King Charles XI of Sweden, and ultimately Prince Adolf Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp ascended to the Swedish throne in 1751, founding the Holstein-Gottorp dynasty of Sweden (ruled 1751-1818).'

*Sidles back from the beach in a state of dishevel, nips through the Salon to the guest rooms, and eventually reappears minus sarong (which was covered in sand and spilt daquiri) and hibiscus flowers (wilted, squashed) and sensibly clad in jeans and a shirt with hair damp from shower*
The combination of quaffing, germ warfare, and WA's impromptu dancing led to a sort of viking stampede. Only half were running UP the beach and half were running DOWN.
Gw7en, so sorry about the job, especially after all that build-up and you being so keen on it. Owie.
Sol - all the schools in Nodnol must be barking mad not to have you. Mad mad mad. Doing all sorts of stuff other than teaching kids makes a person a much better teacher. And a history teacher who can do the Another Point of View on the World Wars? Above rubies, surely. Gah.
Lil - Hurrah for Landlady's recovery! And fingers crossed for your X-Ray results.
Me, I am half Irish (both grandmothers), quarter German-Jewish and quarter French Canadian, and the Irish half subdivides into Anglo-Irish Protestant who converted to Catholicism, and Dublin Jewish who also converted to Catholicism on her second marriage, which I am not a product of. My family is more than a little odd about religion. Oh, and we recently discovered the Canadian bit is mixed race, which had been the Dreaful Secret which led to my great-grandparents precipitate divorce and my poor grand-dad being told his father was DEAD for 20 years. He wasn't. He just turned out to be unacceptably black. *Shakes head at ridiculous tragedy of prejudice and bigotry*
One large coffee, please, IIEM, with maybe just a teaspoon of Sisu in it.

Chin up Gwen, something will turn up, probably a No6
Is it safe to take the tin hat off?
