Don't get me wrong, I'm in a union (although exactly how a bunch of graduate students ended up in the autoworkers' union, I don't know!), and it does a lot of good things for me. But when they ask us to go on strike for "unfair labor practices" and then cannot or will not articulate exactly what those may be, that bugs me. Or like a couple of years ago, when they expected some 20 thousand of us to go on strike for a minor, minor (were talking about $20 a month) increase in the pay of 6 people. I mean really.
Irv's right...unions have good aspects and bad. However, I think they've outlived their usefulness in some arenas, namely those markets that have been globalized -- automotive, manufacturing. For instance, a lot of manufacturers, rather than fight with unions any longer, have moved down below the Mexican border and built macquilladoras. Basically, they're doing the same thing, without all the bothersome OSHA regulations, pollution controls, etc. And thousands of US jobs are lost.

Gw7en, I used to go to school in Austin! Where do you work?
Lil, sounds like you need a week off!
> just dying at the normal healthy rate, if you know what I mean
That's what I was thinking. We'll expect you to die at the normal time, then?
> I also like the ontology of lolcats

> I understand it must be DEEPLY frustrating for a doctor to be unable to do or suggest anything else for a chronic condition, but to suggest it's all in the patient's head, and said patient needs to get a grip...
A common problem. It's especially disturbing when the problem is neurological, and the doctor can't find anything wrong. I think I would have flattened him with the chair.

I work off 360 about half a mile before the Bee Caves exit if you're coming from 183, Lentilla. Did you go to UT?

I like lol cats.
I have written and deleted loads of posts about diagnois, expectations, the way the NHS isn't meeting younger peoples expectations, but still meets most older people expectations. BUt it's all a bit too controversial really.

Gwen, I used to go to Westlake High School, up the road off Capital of Texas Highway. I'm still not over the improper usage of 'Capital.'

Lentilla, I've driven past there many times. I think this is yet another case of "small world".
Z, once the controversy wears down a bit, I'd love to read your take on healthcare in general. I like to consider myself an educated patient and the more you share your knowledge the more educated I become.

Lil, what an awful day! Definitely, take a week off, and consider your options. Here, this will help, I'm sure of it:
Sympathy to all migraine sufferers. Lucky to have only had one in my life -- followed by a stroke, about 3 hours later, so probably not a migraine, technically. Maybe.
Runescribe, glad to hear you're only dying at the normal rate, like the rest of us.
Congrats on a good show, David!
Unions, don't talk to me about unions! I grew up in Detroit, and every time the unions had a strike against one of the car companies (which worked out to ~ every two years) my Dad got laid off, since he worked for a tool and die maker that worked with all three of the Big Three. I know, some unions are needed, but even those can go horribly wrong -- look at the United Mine Workers.
I'm all posted out, off to

*Finds Lil another cushion and a large stiff drink* - Dear BOB, Lil, what a day. Well done for surviving it, and I do hope the new job in the friend's shop is lovely. I am so sorry for the multiple rejections/ smacks-in-face way all that was handled. It sucks.
for David!
