My heater chose to die last night - as a cold front moved in. I can barely feel my nose right now.
Time to cuddle with Eliot .

Winter, or what passes for winter, has finally hit SoCal. Rainy and windy and chilly (I won't say cold, because cold would imply something far lower temperature wise than it is here). And of course, I have errands to run today of the postal variety. Joy.

I have neither seen nor read I Am Legend, but I have heard a radio adaptation. Wasn't bad, and had what I assume is the original ending.

FG, I think you've gotten the left-hand side of the front that hit Texas this morning. Brrrrrrr! It's 29° right now, which is just a tad chilly considering it was 76° in the house yesterday. I was even thinking about turning the A/C on.
Christmas cards... I have never sent out Christmas cards. Every year I think about it, and then decide that it's already too late.
> Especially when I'm drinking mulled cider out a tooth-mug as I write them. Hee hee.
A tooth mug? Does it look like this?

The ending to 'I Am Legend' definitely felt prepackaged. Meh... I enjoyed it anyways. These days, if it has Wil Smith, it's going to be predigested anyway, so I expect it.

Hi Sporky! And ltp!
Back from Edinburgh.
I'd not come across Gauss before - presumably the blur is named after him? On the other hand, the acme klein bottle is one of my favourite sites - in fact it was in this very salon that I first came across it. I've even got my very own klein bottle.
Is it FG or Gwen whose nose is freezing off? I do feel for you. I hope your heating comes back again soon.
Had a long day spending much of it in a meeting with the world's most impressively uncooperative woman. She's taken passive aggression and turned it into a zen sport. I'm fascinated by just how blandly impassive she can be. She's also a dead-ringer for my friend K which is bizzare in anther way entirely. So I spent the entire morning either:
staring at her to make eye contact and get her to accept responsibility for doing something - anything
staring at her in impressed astonishment at her bland passivity
staring at her in confusion because she looks so like K
She presumably thinks I am demented or a stalker or both.
Tired. Embro's a long way off in the dark.

Gauss. Did Mathematics with a Capital M in the late 18th/ early 19th centuries. Surveyed Hanover with a heliotrope. Gave Sophie Germain her honorary degree.
*Laughs heartily at the tooth mug* - Don't you call it a tooth mug in the States? The glass or mug you keep your tooth-brush in and use for gargling and spitting and rinsing hair out of the sink? Must be a British boarding-school thing.
Hey Sporky!

STRANGELY STRANGE ( A brain on a spring ) Posted Dec 15, 2008
I don't cope well with the cold but have an all in one lined suit I can use incase of heating failiure which happend a couple of months ago before weather got colder. My heating also failed a few years ago on a day when it was well past freezing point and had icycles everywhere. Fortunately my central heating repair man came and fixed it the same day as had parts.
.
Along with the all in one suit I have an assortment of warm gloves, boots, hats, etc to be able to cope as have no alternative heating. I had to wait several days for parts during recent reapir so would be very cold this time of year!
.
Fortunately if the electricity failed you can buy wind up radios now. It did recently and it was quite boring then but over last 6 months or so I have quite enjoyed silence. Silence is a very valuable commodity if you have none, my noisey neighbour took away that commodity a lot at one time, and sometimes even now.

I must say, that I'm a bit cold, but that's just because it's wet, and I've got zero insulation on my house. Worse yet, they put the thermostat gauge on the wall right next to the heater, so to get the heat to go on, I have to crank it up way, way too high. So I only turn the heat on when absolutely necessary (which isn't often, believe me!)

'Twas my nose, Ben. I'm at work now, but was able to restore the heat for the before I left home. Still, though,

Yes, it was Gwen with the cold nose and the cold front moving through her part of Texas, whereas ours in Montana has been here since Friday night. Today's high was a positively balmy 0 F. And tonight's low? -16F, without the wind chill.

It's a cold snap here which has brought an awful lot of pneumonia.
Lot of the local hospitals have gone into 90s style 'meltdown' people on trolleys etc just because we're getting so many in. We're just managing to avoid this, though we've got every extra ward open at the moment.
We just have to remember that a few years ago this was routine.

Right I have caught up with the 3 day backlog .
I spent the weekend away at the Xmas fly bash 2008. Where a dozen or so assorted nutters camped for 2 nights next to a lake , got drunk , paddled kayaks and tried to catch trout . It rained from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning without stopping The wind semi-destroyed the small marquee we had set up on friday night but we repaired it with lumps of wood and cable ties . Everybody had a great time and I even persuaded a Rainbow trout to take my fly
Hyp , do you not have Christmas crackers in the USA ? Christmas dinner would not be Christmas dinner without cheap tacky novelties scatered across the table or wearing a stupid hat .

Brrrrrrrrrrr.... still 27°....
I might be convinced to buy a Klein bobble hat.
> Don't you call it a tooth mug in the States?
Heh... I call it that nasty glass in the bathroom I wouldn't drink out of unless it was washed out with boiling water... Which begs the question - why do I keep it in the bathroom?
I'm glad I opted to get the house insulated a couple of years ago. It was the blown-in kind of insulation, which means our attic is full of little bits of paper now, but the house stays a lot cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and it knocked some money off the bills.
